It’s simply fighter pride. It happens, fighters always think they have a chance. David Lemieux fired Russ Anber for throwing in the towel vs Rubio. Power punchers never think their out of a fight. My buddy whose been a head trainer for 20+ years has been fired by 2 different fighters that were getting annihilated for throwing in the towel. They all think they’re invincible. Too tough for their own good.
Even the best coach can’t do anything if the fighter doesn’t listen. I think Breland gave up trying to teach Wilder anything years ago, since even when he gives Wilder the correct instructions Wilder goes out and does whatever he wants. “With Joshua he got the height, he got the power and in the heavyweight division you don’t need skills. In the heavyweight division you can eliminate skills from anybody, even including myself, I don’t need skills. I have power. You’re in the game once you’ve got that power, that equaliser that no matter what at any given time [you can use],” Wilder said. https://www.boxingnewsonline.net/deontay-wilder-in-the-heavyweight-division-you-dont-need-skills/# Russ Anber, who used to train Wilder talked about how difficult working with Wilder was, since Wilder would overrule everything such as removing boxing drills that he and Breland prepared for him and instead do more fitness oriented training that he excells at. Anber said Wilder got even harder to work with after winning the title and he split with Wilder.
Deas leaves impression that he is rally dumb he is like 5th grader that cheers about his favorite team, boxer, action star... Very delusional and removed from reality
Many people called it after the fight. We knew they'd use Breland as the scapegoat and Deas at the post fight press conference pushed that narrative, to ensure he had someone to blame other than himself. People need to be concerned for Wilder in the rematch, with a corner that won't save him next time, he could get seriously hurt. Hopefully they have a decent ref this time who will save Wilder, the last thing boxing needs is another tragedy especially one so high profile.
The fighter is the last to admit and sometimes know that he's taking just to much punishment. On a side note, when the fight was stopped, I initially thought it was Kenny Bayless that stopped it and thought he had prematurely stopped it because that shots that Fury had landed when it was stopped, didn't stagger Wilder, in fact Wilder came out of that crossfire by Fury wide eyed and looking to land his own when Bayless all of a sudden stopped it. I didn't think it was the right call for Bayless to have stopped it at that point, but when I heard that the corner threw in the towel, I really had no problem with that call because it is them who are looking directly upon Wilder in between rounds and seeing his condition.
Im.hoping it's Steve smoger who will let them.fight. No more stupid excuses, someone who will let the fight go on until wilder cries or says his beat
I don't want Wilder to be killed in the next match, mainly because something like that could lead to Fury losing interest in the sport and retiring.
Unless they’re looking for a ready made excuse, I’m not sure Wilder’s team would go for a ref who encourages fighting out of the clinch.
Was I the only person watching this fight quite literally worried that Deontay was going to collapse in the ring with a brain injury?
I thought along those lines as I could see Wilder really struggling, and all this talk of breland being chucked under the bus, the whole corner were psis poor.
No matter how good the trainer is, you can't make a fighter listen. Wilder has a mentality based purely on his physical attributes. He doesn't want to learn. There was actually a poster on here who had saw Wilder (and Gassiev, amongst others) training. Wilder was notorious for ignoring Breland and his drills, preferring to just work the bag constantly instead. You really can't get much better than Breland for experience of the game and skills. Wilder is a fool.
