Charles Martin is a former champion too and he won his belt in a similar manner: at home, with some controversy, for a vacant title. Parker then defended his paper title against *Cojanu* in NZ (who if Wilder had defended against him would clearly be his softest defence) and Parker couldn't even hurt him over 12 rounds in NZ. Then Parker fought a green Hughie Fury and got another controversial 12 round decision, albeit in Britain this time rather than NZ. This was the glorious reign of Joseph Parker, before he meekly surrendered his title to AJ and was bullied by Whyte: a man he had clear advantages over in athleticism and durability. If you want to talk about rankings then Parker is not currently in the top 5, whereas Stiverne and Ortiz both were when Wilder fought them. I don't think anyone takes Parker seriously as a title challenger anymore, so "top contender" is pushing it. Maybe he could get hold of another vacant belt again if Usyk retired or was stripped but Parker would have to be matched carefully. The main problem with Parker is that he seriously lacks killer instinct and determination: even last time where he was better in these regards, he gassed and failed to get a borderline shot Chisora out of there and made a war of it. In the fight before that he said he wouldn't have complained if Chisora had been given the decision (!) which is a loser's mentality at the elite level. Parker also lacks power at the top level, which minimises his puncher's chance. Whatever Stiverne and Ortiz lacked, they did not lack killer instinct, determination or punching power, which is why they had far more impressive KO wins than Parker has and thus more chance of upsetting a strong champion.
He’s probably going just in case Whyte KO’s him and if he does he can mock Fury and bring up all his excuses again.
I think I just said it twice. Wilder's been ruining the British party for seven years. And he'll be there standing in the way of the winner today yet again. IF Whyte wins, it'll be hilarious when the WBC tells him he has to fight Wilder next. The meltdown around here would be epic. IF Fury wins and says he's quitting, Wilder fights for the vacant belt next ... and another meltdown commences.
I think you're ignoring a key difference here, and that's that both Ortiz and Stiverne are well and truly past their primes. The only real decent opponent they faced recently was Wilder, to which they both lost. Wilder in turn hasn't beaten anyone better than them. Yes you can argue he drew against a severely rusted Fury, but most see Fury as being robbed that first fight. As for comparing Charles Martin to Parker... Really? It's obvious who the better fighter is. Just compare their performances against AJ. Yes Parker has left a lot to be desired in previous fights, and I say this as a fan, but he is still young and has made notable improvements under Andy Lee. He still has a future in boxing, and I'd pick him to beat Wilder in a hard fight. I wouldn't pick Stiverne, Ortiz or Charles Martin to beat Chisora. But hey, just my opinion.
Wilder has lost his last two fights via KO. He shouldn't be next for a title shot until he beats a ranked contender. Tall ask for team Wilder, I know.
