Part of the backlash with Wilder are that the claims being made about him being so far beyond what he actually proved.

He failed to differentiate himself from contemporaries like Joyce, Parker, Ruiz, Hrgovic etc yet we are supposed to believe he was better than them without evidence.

 

No one will give him much credit, just like no one with any sense gives Lewis credit for beating Tyson.

Those are arguably more impressive stoppage wins than anything Wilder has managed. He was also the first to stop Lerena. His power can't be doubted.

 

Every one of those men you mentioned and maybe a dozen more currently active has a bigger signature win than Wilder.

 

Lerena dropped Dubios 3 times in a single round. Power means sweet FA if you're getting dropped by journeymen and quitting the moment things don't go your way.

 

Wilder has been dropped by journeyman though. And he was nearly taken out by Ortiz.

Regardless of what you think of Hrgovic and Miller those are still on par or better than any Wilder stoppage. Who did Wilder stop that was better?

 

Wilder has never quit, and the only opponent he didn't knockout after a knockdown was Tyson Fury.

You're also not taking those stoppages into context. Dubios headbutt Hrgovic and got the stoppage via a cut, and he couldn't even knock Miller down. This is the same Miller who struggled to get a draw against a past it Ruiz.

Wilder has knocked down or out all opponents he has faced except Parker and Zhang. I'd rate Ortiz above Miller and Hrgovic.

Dubois had two jab quitjob losses against Joyce and Usyk. Joshua was a 70-30 favourite, regarded as coming off some of his best career performances against fighters Fury had struggled with.

Finkel and Hearn were both trying to maximise risk reward, these are businessmen. Finkel thought he could get 50-50, Hearn thought 60-40, probably with home advantage for fight 1, if not both fights. Both were happy to delay the fight to build hype a la Mayweather-Pacquiao, and Hearn/Joshua were additionally happy to delay it in order to age the 4 years older Wilder out, and get Joshua more experience (Joshua admitted this in 2018).

Neither side was all that enthusiastic about the fight. Wilder's team were very cautious prior to 2018, and Joshua's team knew he was vulnerable, which we all saw later when he was dropped 9 or 10 times, quit in 7 and got KO'd in 5 respectively by Ruiz and Dubois.

 

There's no shame in losing to Usyk and the Joyce fight was years prior when he was less developed. The fight was undoubtedly a massive risk for Joshua against one of the biggest punchers in the division. Why did he take it in your view?
