Remember that Byrd took the fight on a weeks notice and had never seen any footage of Vitali on tape , so naturally it took him a few rounds to find his bearings and adjust. As soon as he found his footing he began to make Vitali look buffoonishsh. What was notable from round 1 is how ineffective Vitali was in landing a meaningful shot on Byrd. Compare to the Ike fight where Byrd was in complete survival mode from round 2. If Vitali thought the loss was due to a fluke injury he would have taken the rematch but he passed it up for Timo Hoffman instead. He knew Byrd had gotten the better of him and wanted no part of a Byrd with experience and a full camp. It was a legit stoppage win for Byrd. At least Wilder fought to the very last minute against Fury which enabled him to hold onto his title. He is also willing to take a remtach , unlike Vitali
Sanders is Vitalis best win.. followed by Peter & maybe then Briggs .. he was also ring champion at one point too. Wilders best wins are Stiverne, Ortiz &... ermhhh.. umhhhh... ermhhhh ... Arreola?
Gomez was a good win, 44-1, dominant cruiser champ, solid step up to hw and was wbc mandatory after beating big punching Vyrchys. Vitali toyed with him as he did prime Adamek.
Harldy. Wilder should have lost to Fury, and nearly lost to Ortiz, who depending on the source was 38-41 and suspended prior from juice, which might have been a reason he was ranked. So Wilder just waited him to age, and agree to a drug test in exchange for Ortiz to get a payday, and barley pulled it out. Vitali has beaten a much better class, more men ranked in the top team x champions, and higher ranked opponents in general.
What? Wilder and Fury officially fought to a draw. Just like Byrd and Golota, Holyfield and Lewis, Rahman and Toney, Burns and O'Brien, and Jack Johnson and Jim Johnson officially fought to a draw in heavyweight title fights ... Wilder and Fury fought to a draw. Those draws all officially count as successful title defenses on Byrd, Rahman, Burns, Johnson, Holyfield and Lewis' resumes, because they didn't lose. Wilder's officially counts as well, since he successfully defended the title like they did. Vitali officially lost both the Byrd and Lewis fights. Hell, he didn't even last the distance. He quit against Byrd and was stopped on cuts against Lewis. Not remotely the same. Vitali didn't finish either fight and was officially declared the LOSER of both.
I had forgotten just how bad Vitali's comeback run was. Started off with a huge bang. Him demolishing Peter the way he did was astonishing. Arreola was an OK scalp. Solis was OK as well, even if the injury caused the fight to end abruptly. Fact it is that Vitali wobbled Solis and that caused Solis to suffer the injury. Adamek was a good win. He might have been a small heavyweight but he somewaht earned his shot. Chisora was an OK win as well. All in all, very little to gloat about besides great performances from an aging champion.
