While I will not deny Wilder is definitely past his best and inactive, he utterly schooled last night by a guy many (including myself) thought he would handle without too much trouble. Parker, outside of Fury, was the only top 10 guy Wilder has ever fought who wasn’t past their best (Ortiz) or absolutely overrated (Stiverne). He was utterly schooled and imo even at his best he would have had major difficulties with Parker.

AJ on the other hand has beaten Parker, Wallin, Whyte, Ruiz and a string of old guys who were excellent contenders/champions in their day, Povetkin, Pulev, Klitschko. He clearly has the far superior resume and has achieved more in his career imo.

Looking back to say 2017/2018 when both these guys were in their respective primes, how do you all think it would have gone given what we know now?

    Joshua.

Never thought much of Wilder but I thought it would of been a “whoever lands first” kind of fight at one point. I know Wilder is 38 and hasn’t been that active but seeing him in there with Parker (a solid HW who came to win) today I don’t think Wilder has anymore than a punchers chance at any stage of his career.

AJ. Wilder has now lost to every big fighter he stepped up too.

Any top 20 hw who doesn't get caught beats wilder. That's always been the case, nothing to do with he's past his best. He never been any good and always relied on detonating a bomb to win.

If you don't get caught you win, that's goes for AJ as much as anyone else.

Joshua. Similar firepower but with much better skills. Wilder had a window after AJ broke mentally after the Usyk losses. A prime Wilder would have KOd that guy.

About Frank De Mori? I’ll admit when I’m wrong. You, not so much.

Joshua KO's him in their primes and does so early.

I was beginning to think Wilder would beat Joshua recently because Joshua has been so timid since losing to Usyk but after his performance against Wallin where he looked more like his old self and just how easily Parker handled Wilder, no version of Wilder beats any version of Joshua. Even the Joshua that lost to Ruiz beats Wilder because Ruiz had to eat bombs to get Joshua to open up and Wilder doesn't get up from the combo that dropped Ruiz.

If Joshua went for him, I think he would blast him out. It’s dangerous, as always with Widler, but I think he lacks the defence and fundamentals to keep a peak AJ off him. I’d still cal it a 50/50 at their peaks as Wilder could literally end the fight with 1 shot.

    Prime?
Joshua, no question - Wilder has a punchers chance, but it's almost a mismatch and always was... It really is a "levels" question.

And I think Wilder always knew it, too.

I wouldn't call it 50/50. Yeah Wilder could end it with one shot but damn he was befuddled by Parker, against Joshua he'd be backing up so fast he'd trip over his own feet. He'd never be allowed to plant his feet to throw and unlike Parker Joshua knows how to counter, so even if Wilder is able to uncork a few right hands, his attack is so predictable Joshua will like see it coming and come back with a big counter and put Wilder on his ass.

Wilder was able to feast on a bunch of hand picked opponents who were sitting ducks, even Ortiz was a cherry pick as he hadn't impressed vs Scott and Allen and was old so was probably on the slide or at least that's what his team hoped and Ortiz was another slow footed fighter Wilder could take advantage off but even old plodding Ortiz on heart meds out boxed him for 99% of their fights. No way he ever beats Joshua, which is why not even 100 mill was enough to make Wilder sign the contract.

Again very fair points and I agree with that you are saying. Ortiz for me has never been near the fighter he was hyped up to be and AJ would have been way tougher for Wilder.

Sure, age and wear and tear have taken their toll on Wilder, but can anyone look back at Fury 1 or Ortiz 2 and say that was a very different fighter?

Those were pretty much the same, little in the way of gameplan or set up or really engaging - just looking for the big punch. In those fights he landed it, in this he didn't.

An aggressive Joshua at his best wouldn't give him the time to look for that homerun punch. He'd push him back behind a strong jab like Fury in the rematch and eventually finish him. Wilder would always have the puncher's chance. but I don't think it would be a big one.

Wilder tuned down 100 mil to face Joshua in 2019, probably because he saw something similar.
