Is PPV dead? Did 800-850k buys by the looks of it. Break even numbers at best bearing in mind both guys got a $28m guarantee. PBC and Top Rank we’re aiming for a minimum of 1m buys and Arum even said 2 million.

surely the next fight is going to lose money as I would imagine their will be less buys and similar guarantees.

The fight was promoted well but when you factor in the Super Bowl commercials which would have been lost revenue to the networks. PPV models will be on their last legs soon.

Arums 2 mil claims were just ridiculous and only an idiot believed that.

With such huge promotion and marketing they were probably looking to hit 1 mil minimum.

Now how do you do a third fight which will do less than this. Makes no sense.

Only breaking even is kinda crazy. All that promotion, dual network etc etc and it's break even.

Wow I was sure it would do over a million with all the hype and the big turn out at the weigh in. But then in hindsight most of those in the weigh in were probably Brits to see Fury not fans of Wilder who lets be honest never has been and never will be any kind of draw.

Pretty evident that PPV in the US may very well be dead. DAZN having also taken the biggest PPV star Canelo, it's not a format that will likely last much longer.

It's simply over priced in the US and with streaming services offering content at a fraction of the price I can't see how it can survive. Will Showtime reconsider it's stance and do a HBO and pull out of boxing?

Like @Puroresu_Fan said, nobody believed the 2M bull to begin with. After all the fuss about this fight beforehand (a lot more as I expected) I figured it would be a huge succes, doing between 800k and 1M and it turned out a bit on the low side of my prediction.
Most others expected quite a bit less though, and seeing now that 1 to 1.1M is about break even, I think they massively overpaid both fighters.

The thing is UFC can still do mega numbers with the right fighter so ppv isn't completely dead.

This fight was prompted to the max. They couldn't have asked for a bigger budget yet it still didn't crack 1 mil.

Kills that theory where some were claiming HW fights would see a return to million plus ppv buys.

    You can't really compare.
These are just the American figures, and Fury and Wilder 2 was priced at $80 in America.
On today's exhange rate that is £62.

Maybe America should lower its PPV prices.

It will interesting to see how many people in the UK bought this on BT for £25.

I have a feeling that the chances of the rematch being a bit less immediate than Wilder wants are rising. There’s a mega-money fight ready to be made, and he isn’t in it.

So it's just boxing specific, the sports fans are there, just not in boxing in the US unless you're probably of Mexican descent.

Kind of sad to see US interest wane to the point that one of the biggest fights that could be made, in the marquee division can't generate interest in levels that UFC can.

Doesn't bode well for boxing in general in the US.

    $850,000 x $80 = $68,000,000 from PPV revenue.

Then add revenue from networks around the world and the arena gate.

    You think it's a bust?

The difference with the UFC is nobody but Connor gets anywhere near PPV boxing purses. So they need a lot less buys.

That's what you get with those ridiculous prices and a lot of people abroad not even having a legal outlet available to see it. That's why logically streaming services eventually take over.

deduct the networks cut at 25%. UK PPV would generate roughly $5m at 400k buys which is a good number for 5am. Other territories would not be paying big money and most had it on free TV. DAZN for instance showed it in Germany.

You are looking at $68m minus 25% = $51 + $5m UK +$16m gate + $3m other territories. Deduct $56m minimum purses... plus undercard costs, promotional costs and the biggest one of them all marketing costs which included a superbowl commercial which is a couple mil. Which even if it wasnt paid for, it would have been deducted from the profit and loss account of the event. doesn't leave too much money for profit to split between Top Rank and PBC after all that effort
