Wilder was unbeaten for 12 years, thanks to the fact that he had fought, up until Fury, a bunch of bums, (quite literally). The Guy has been fed a magnificent diet of tomato cans. Of 9 opponents in 11 defenses, only 2 opponents were universally ranked - the other 7 were completely unranked. Otherwise, the worst competition for anyone ever claiming any sort of heavyweight title. In his supposed defenses, Eric Molina, Johann Duhaupas, Artur Szpilka, Chris Arreola, Gerald Washington, Bermane Stiverne, Dominic Breazeale, NONE of them were universally ranked in the top 10.
When exactly Wilder fought and beat someone on Lyle's level? Just answer this question. I guess the closest is Ortiz, but he's much less proven than Lyle. Nobody else is even close.
Ortiz feels like a strong number six and Stiverne a rather weak number six. But yeah, that's the peak of Wilder's achievement in terms of victories. It's awful. Still, I'd pick him to beat Lyle though.

His opponents' combined records in those 13 consecutive title fights were 343-14-6. You think that's the worst competition anyone defending a title has faced? And there were no fights with faded light heavyweights with "inflated 100 fight wins" like Gregorio Peralta - who Lyle couldn't even beat in Peralta's last pro fight. There were no KO losses to guys with 10-4 records like Lynn Ball. He wasn't fighting former names coming off losses to Toronto Five contestants or faded 60s era guys living in whorehouses. They were nearly all experienced, rated guys on the rise with zero, one or two losses. Once Wilder got rated, there were no Al Jones type opponents with his 8-20-2 record, like Lyle fought in '74 when he was rated. Ron Lyle would've been just another guy Wilder smoked in a title defense. That's all.
I'd favor Wilder in a battle of the contenders. Neither were ever going to be top dog in a strong era.
https://boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine's_Annual_Ratings:_Heavyweight--2010s Take a look at this, only 2 of them were universally ranked when they stepped into the ring with wilder. The other guys were not in the top 10 rankings. (It should be noted that some of them did enter the top 10 once, but when deontay fought them, they were nowhere to be found.) This is a fact most experts agree with. For one, you have Tyson Fury who said "Wilder fought 35 bums…37 actually…Stiverne the first time he turned up came to fight…And then he’s fought Ortiz and Ortiz is 147 years-old, everybody knows that…But, he still gave him a good fight. So there’s two men, out of all of those men.” Sources : Tyson Fury: Deontay Wilder fought 34 bums, won't want a rematch) |WBN - World Boxing News - Boxing News, Reports and Interviews Roy jones jr said the same thing : “if you look back at the names on [Wilder's] record, they don't add up to the names on Mikey Tyson's record. The only person that has a record that we knew anything about, and he never had a professional career and was a celebrated amateur, at best, was [Luis] Ortiz. Ortiz was a good fighter but with his lack of pro experience, [and age] Wilder took him into the deep water last time and drowned him.” Sources: Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. takes issue with Deontay Wilder's reaction to defeat Even mike breland, who used to train wilder, was aware of the fact wilder wasn't fighting any strong competition apart from the prehistoric ortiz and fury: “You say [Wilder] had some ‘good wins?’ Luis Ortiz was a good win. Just that fight; that was it. He doesn’t jump rope, he doesn’t hit the speed bag and he doesn’t hit the heavy bag.” The Neutral Corner Ep. 253 recap (Mark Breland on Deontay Wilder, DAZN/ESPN previews) - The Ring
