Sure but Wilder isn't a top ten boxer either on the basis that his resume is 98% bums and he had to get lucky to get a draw against a very unfit and rusty Fury... Especially now Fury's invincibility narrative has crumbled and people are taking a more balanced view of him. Say what you like about Chisora and Whyte, but they took on genuine threats and took their L's and kept on going..
Wilder is one of the 10 best HWs in the world, obviously. Whyte and Chisora are journeymen. They give guys hard fights but they eventually lose to everybody.
The biggest difference is they'd actually fight anybody - Wilder ducks... Look at Chisora's L's and Wilder would lose to most of them, same with Whytes. And lest we forget, Wilder ducked Whyte for years... If Whyte is shyte, that says a lot about Wilder's self confidence. Top ten, possibly, but it's highly debatable with a resume that long and being as inactive as he has been.
Okay, they fight everybody but they lose. They are fun and their attitude is good for the sport but I am not going to rate someone higher because they accept fights and in the end lose. If Wilder would or not win or lose to Povektin we don't know. Wilder wins over Ortiz are good. Whyte is a good fighter but he is not better than Ortiz, hardly he has the name to anyone duck him... he is just not a big name in.
I want to see Zhang Ngannou. Wilder got iced twice by the same fat bum that Ngannou just embarrassed.
Even if there are 10 HW's who beat Ngannou on most nights he still has a puncher's chance. Someone like Makhmudov would be at great risk I think, Takam's punches were making an impact and Mak doesn't have a backfoot game. On the inside he'd find someone equally strong or stronger.
I thought it was hilarious Joe Tessitore called Ngannu "the hardest puncher in combat sports" at the start of the fight. I don't like Deontay at all, but his punch removes people from their physical bodies.
They'd fight anybody and sometimes lose... But they at least had the balls to try, and sometimes did quite well. Sure, a loss doesn't necessarily count as a positive on the resume, and unless it's close (or the opponent is very, very good but it's still competitive) or it's a robbery then it doesn't really count for much. If Wilder believed he had a chance against Pov he would've taken the fight - the excuse about drugs cheats looks ridiculous when it was a Micky Mouse offence and Wilder later went in with a wrecked Fury whose drug offenses were ten times worse. Realistically, we can be fairly confident Pov would've won - 70/30 for Pov is generous (to Wilder). Ortiz is another, like Wilder, who gets hyped up as if he was something special - but you look at his resume and there's simply nothing there... His best win was bang average Bryant Jennings - a man whose career highlight was losing a comfortable UD to Wlad, hardly the stuff that defines a serious fighters resume. So Ortiz being nothing particularly special, Wilder should've had it easy, no? Except he didn't, and needed rescuing by the referee. Chisora's resume is better than Ortiz, by a long way, and Whytes is better still. And again - Wilder ducked Whyte... And Povetkin... And Joshua... And made zero attempt to unify against Parker. Put in context the fights that were out there, the fighters with decent reputations begging for a bout - the overall picture is of a highly protected champion who knew full well he couldn't cut it with any of the best in the division.
Idk man. I think it might be worth you rewatching round 1 of Ngannou vs Fury again, and really look at what Ngannou is doing in there, and then compare it to Wilder against Fury. Ngannou showed one of the most important and overlooked traits in boxing, and that is control of distance, positioning, and his anticipation. Fury is not an easy fighter to do that against because Fury likes to try and get you out of your groove with his constant feints... but Ngannou showed very good poise, very good control of distance, an awareness and abilities to land counters. It's actually one of the main reasons Fury was able to land so many more punches on Wilder, and mount better offensive assaults, is Ngannous better management of distance than Wilder. He doubled up on his jabs, threw combinations, and even went to the body. He also showed extremely good energy management. Now go watch Wilder against Fury. Wilder does a lot of good in there too, but I dont think theres as big a gap in ability as youre suggesting. Wilder is going to have a much bigger, more durable power puncher who throws in combination, walking him down. That has always been and will always be non ideal attribute matchup for Wilder. Then factor in he's been in the ring for less than 3 minutes in years. And he has big question marks over what his body even has left after two hellacious beatings against Fury. There is a blend of facts, and attributes, that suggest a tough night for Wilder. When you are fighting a guy who is not just bigger than you, but more durable, and also has more than enough power to hurt you, you need to have sufficient enough skill and ability to overcome that. Now is it possible Wilder still does? Sure. But people are sleeping on Ngannou once again here if they dont see the realistic danger Wilder is in. Imo. At any rate, looks like the most realistic next opponent for Ngannou, so we will get a chance to see at least. I sincerely hope you are right lol.
Wilder does a lot of skill and ability based things very well, and better than Francis. He also does other very wrong, and worse than Francis. Maybe it was overboard to say Ngannou could be the better boxer at this stage, but I'm not confident that any gap that may be between them in skill and ability overcomes the physical and factual disadvantages going against Wilder here.
Im a Wilder fan, have been from Day 1, Ngannou would be a problem. That said Ngannou is a problem for anybody, the dude can fight, he’s fought at the top level in a skill dominated sport with real assassins gunning for his chin. He won’t be intimidated, he won’t be scared, and if you’re going to beat him you better bring a lunch I don’t care who it is.
What will Wilder do if Francis takes a note from Fury and decides to clinch and lay his weight on Wilder? Look at how he physically manhandled a near 280 lbs Fury, what is Wilder and his chicken legs going to do?
Wilder is a bum with the skills of a five year old. He also has an old granny chin, chicken legs, and he's lost his heart for the game. Ngannou would merc him. Bring it on.
