If not for referee assistance, Ortiz would most likely have been the champ in their rematch. And Ortiz was always an overhyped gatekeeper.
I'd forgotten about his dead body comments. It just goes to show how he's changed a lot mentally. In his last two fight build ups he really came across as rambling and weird.
I'd say Wilder has a reasonable chin, and is likely equal or better than AJs. AJs chin has rarely been tested by bigger punchers and has definitely shown cracks over the years (Ruiz, Whyte, Klitschko). The point you make on weakness is a two way street. Ngannou is there for the taking imo, coming off two losses and Wilder knows Ngannou can be knocked out. Tbh the fight shouldn't even happen. It's a joke fight like the last two.
Wow. You're usually pretty good in your judgements but I think this is one that needs a rethink. Joshua's fought as close to a murderers row as it's possible to get in this mediocre era - taken big punches from most of the biggest proven punchers and not been knocked out once... Ruiz knocked his equilibrium with a temple shot, and he might have quit a little easily, but he wasn't knocked out. He got hurt by Wlad and buzzed pretty bad by Usyk - but never knocked out. Wilder before Zhang (and possibly afterwards, Zhang's not super proven) never fought anyone who hit has hard as Wlad, Pov, Whyte etc... but he got stopped by Fury who has pretty mediocre power, got hurt pretty bad by Ortiz who doesn't have elite power either. Wilder's chin is the unproven one with the big question mark against it... IMHO it's just the same old hype that's still not gone away. This isn't unfair - Ngannou's chin took Fury's mediocre power much better than Wilder's, but that doesn't necessarily mean he can take Wilder's power (which even now will be more than Fury's)... Then again, can Wilder get his head around unorthodox Ngannou and time him the way Joshua did? Does he even have the same kind of power as Joshua? We don't really know because he hid from adversity for so long. Yes it's a bit of a joke fight... It's just that unlike Fury (when serious) and Joshua, Wilder has never proven to be legit - and that makes it an interesting enough hypothetical that it might actually enhance the hype for a card, even if it's a poor fight (which it probably would be).
I'd like to see Wilder vs Anderson. He'd be an ideal comeback opponent for Anderson. Also I wouldn't mind seeing Wilder fight Jalolov or Torrez.
AJ may have a fairly decent resume, but I feel my point remains true. Fury might not have great power, but he's still a big heavyweight capable of producing accumulating damage. There's no shame in Wilder getting knocked out by Zhang who's power is definitely there having knocked out Joyce twice and put Parker down twice. Was Wilder overrated? Sure. I also think AJ is overrated now, and his chin is definitely a weak point. Equilibrium shot or no, who else has Ruiz ever knocked out?
The point is, putting aside Zhang, Wilder's been badly hurt and stopped by a guy with very mediocre power in Fury - Fury might be big, but he isn't a big puncher and never has been. Wilder was always very, very overrated - his resume is 99% hot trash and 1% lukewarm trash. AJ is a thoroughly unlikeable character, but he's proven legit - if his chin was "definitely" a weak point then he'd have been knocked out multiple times by now... And yet he hasn't been knocked out once. Ruiz had fast hands and reasonable power - he's blown very hot and cold, but he could be dangerous at times... He got a bit lucky with that win, the same as the likes of Rahman got a bit lucky to beat Lewis, but it still counts for the history books. I can't stand AJ as an individual and I'm always happy to see him get beat, but he's got levels on Wilder in every department - INCLUDING chin.
I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Respect your opinion and enjoyed discussing this with you though.
