This is just speculation from me so not coming from some special source or anything but with the abrupt change from berto vs Devon Alexander (a feeder/showcase fight for Errol Spence) to Ortiz vs whoever. I’m beginning to think the showtime/pbc execs wanted to showcase Ortiz off on the highest stage they could after a relatively quick layoff. Why you’re wondering?

Because with Joshua going to fight povetkin Wilder had very few choices. An ortiz rematch makes sense from a viewership and gate perspective and if his American support is legit, they should be able to sell 200-300k ppvs.

With the a announcement of Joshua’s new 3 year (or is it 3 fight) hearn deal. That pretty much ensures that Joshua will be fighting on dazn for a while which means no wilder fight for a while.

If wilder can manage to fight Ortiz in a rematch on ppv and beat him in better form than he did the first go round. That could possibly establish deontay as a new American ppv source. Selling in the 250k (Ortiz rematch) range to the 600k range (potential fury fight) Which will entice opponents to fight him instead of AJ (think fury). Again this could set up ppvs vs brazaelle, fury, Parker, kownawki, and other 6th-10th ranked type heavyweights. Hearn looks to be attempting to freeze wilder out and I personally believe this will be wilders/showtimes/pbcs response to hearns attempt. It could possibly work with the new outcry of support that deontay has got since the failed Joshua negotiations.

What are your thoughts on this projection and would you order a wilder-Ortiz 2 ppv?

Wilder vs Ortiz was on DAZN too.

Looking foward to it. First fight was great. Second one will be even better.

Wilder has no choices apart from fighting some bums and cans.

Wilder vs Ortiz II will happen soon.

Ortiz by brutal KNOCKOUT in the sixth round.

I'm not in the US so I don't have the same handle on the market as you guys across the pond but is there really enough interest there to drive PPV sales?

The first fight was exciting and there was some controversy around the doctors inspection but the end was conclusive and Ortiz looked old and tired. He's unlikely to have got any younger since then so the outcome is unlikely to be different in my view.

The networks are out of pocket if a PPV doesn't do the business. I can't see the commercial justification for moving ahead with this on PPV and if I were a premium cable subscriber I'd be pissed at being asked to fork out extra for it.

Wilder - Ortiz will never do 250k buys, are you insane?
It will flop like Kov-Ward and Crawford - Postol

We won't really know where 48 year old Ortiz is at until he fights Cojanu who's in shape!

Id like to see the rematch but not in N.Y or Alabama which probably isn't going to happen.....honestly the Wilder illegal punches got to stop! :nonono

PPV is dead not even Joshua can sell PPVs. Canelo is the only one and he needs the correct dance partner. Fans are sick and tired of paying money for bs and then to make matters worst we have to wait for the fights we wanted to marinate well past an acceptable amount of time.

Doesn't Ortiz have to fight a WBC ranked guy first?

Also I’ve been hearing Wilders gotta a glass chin for about a year now yet he hasn’t been knocked out.

Let me guess you gonna say the ref saved him last time. Well Takam was working AJ on the inside and they wherent letting him anywhere near him same with the ref that help AJ in the Parker fight

Haven't seen the first one yet, and no way this should be PPV. But I have to admit, there have been much lower class PPV bouts in the last couple of years, and somehow people still buy those.

Well.... theres a couple of factors to consider

    1. wilder is probably the number #1 or 2 performing boxer on American television. Canelo would be the other guy, lomachenko gets terrific ratings but heavy also on espn which is in way more house holds than showtime which lads me to point 2

    2. Fresh of then the failed Joshua negotiations there seems to have been an outcry of support for deontay from celebrities to online boxing journalists.

If showtime sees some trends in their data that’s suggests wilder can’t do well enough enough on ppv to cover what they spend on the ppv there’s a good chance they’ll roll the dice. IF he wins and the ppv performs good enough that could set up the fury fight.

It wouldn’t be a 100% lock the ppv performs well. The boxing voice podcast said a ppv only needs 200k sales to be considered a success. We’ll see what showtime does but I wouldn’t be shocked

Well argued and as I said above, not in the US so not so conversant with the market so you may well be right. However I do have a suspicion that:

is right. Streaming and economics may see PPV's come to an end and we may have seen the zenith of PPV. Unless there's an exceptional fight that captures the US casual fans imagination or taps into a passionate fanbase like Canelo's hispanic following then I think there's going to be diminishing returns.
