The first fight definitely was PPV quality. One of the best HWD fights in 2018 so far.

PPV? I’m from the UK, so I personally wouldn’t pay for it, but it makes sense across the pond.

It appears to be one of the best fights out their for Wilder, and in terms of promoting the fight, well, it’s already done.

Should be a another good fight.

Kovalev vs. Ward was promoted horribly and Crawford vs. Postol wasn't a PPV level fight nor was it promoted like one.

Wilder isn't a huge draw here, but he's been on network TV and Showtime owns several other channels and will promote the fight well. 200-300k is realistic, IMO, but not any more. That would mean about one in every 5 households that watched the first fight order the PPV, not an outrageous estimate.

Holding the fight in NY will help drive sales as it will get more media coverage.

Wilder vs. Ortiz 1 had about 1.2 million viewers, the highest rated fight on Showtime since Wilder beat Stiverne. The Stiverne fight had about 100k-200k more.

Wilder's profile is nowhere nearly as high as it probably should be, but Showtime is well positioned to promote the PPV across CBS and other outlets they own. I still think the sales land in the 200-300k range, which is pretty pathetic for a supposed HW champion, but enough to make it profitable.

    1. It's not gonna happen.

    2. It shouldn't be ppv if it does (it wont)

    3. I'm sure it would be another very good fight, as the first one was.

The rematch wouldn't do good numbers and it doesn't even make sense for the fight to be made at the moment, since although Ortiz put up a good fight he still got crushed. If it went to a decision or there were any questions on who won the fight might draw money, but there wasn't any.

I like both fighters and knew Ortiz with his experience and skill would be tough, but I also knew Ortiz fades in the later rounds and is vulnerable to straight right hands and that Wilder would end him in the later rounds.

Also, Ortiz is going to be even older in the rematch, which will most likely result in Wilder stopping him much sooner.

The only PPV worthy fight for Wilder at the moment is a fight between him and Joshua and it's the same for Joshua. I wouldn't buy a PPV watching them fight anybody else at the moment.

If I were Wilder's management looking at a potential AJ fight I'm not sure I'd trade the reduced exposure for the gains from a 200k ppv if it negatively impacted how many watched him v AJ. How much would he expect to make?

Same here. I'd want as big of a profile as possible. Shoot for 1.5 million on Showtime.

Hard to estimate what he'd make off a 200k PPV. I'm sure PBC would find sponsorship money somewhere, but if cable companies keep half your PPV fee, then 200k x $30 per order is only $6 million in TV revenue for the entire card. Gate fee, sponsors, maybe the card generates $10 million and that's for everybody.

Would the boxers really see that much more than they would fighting on a regular showtime production? Factor in the risk if it goes wrong and thus damages the Wilder brand and it looks a gamble for all concerned.

Maybe Miller would make a better dance partner for a PPV debut? Unbeaten, Good talker, brash, Brooklyn vs Alabama. Or maybe Andy Ruiz JR to maybe attract Latino fans but maybe not credible at this time.

    It's not realistic AT ALL.
Wilder is not a draw, 300k is what Canelo got on Showtime few years back.

Wilder has been promoted horribly for 10 years now. It will do 50-70k if they are lucky.

45 year olds who lost the first fight don't tend to do well in rematches.

I might have paid SOME money for the first fight but the second is a foregone conclusion so I would not.

I honestly don't know, but I doubt they'd make much more on a PPV and they stand to lose a lot more, too. Not only financially but credibility wise. Let's say the 1.2 million viewers does turn into 200k, that's not exactly a great negotiating platform with AJ.

Yes exactly. Better to have never been on PPV than to have appeared and flopped. At least the former lets you argue your potential.

You know what was a great first fight and failed as a PPV rematch? Talyor-Pavlik II.
Why would they put it on PPV if it was obvious it would do small numbers?

Just lets look at some surface level trends.
In the last 2 years on HBO, the only two names to deliver on solid PPV numbers are Alvarez and Pacquiao.
    Crawford-Postol, Ward-Kovalev, Golovkin-Jacobs and Golovkin-Lemieux were all disappointments.

Since 2013, the only guys on SHO PPV were Mayweather and Alvarez.

So for SHO to suddenly come out with a PPV looks unlikely, especially it being a rematch of a fight which no one is really asking for. (Yes, people would watch, but it's not the priority so would people pay?)
