It was a close fight before an excellent 1-punch KO. I believe Deontay was winning by a small margin and even if he wasn't, Szpilka weren't getting no decision win against Haymon's CC.
Szpilka and Ronnie Shield had a good game plan for the early rounds but failed to modified it when Wilder slowed down and actually began to sit down more on his punches. After the sixth, they should have stayed in Wilders chest because Szpilka was slowing down too and becoming much more time-able as he was trying to close the distance, which, ultimately led to his undoing.
Wilder seems to be vulnerable to movement and does not fight well going backward. His jab is great, when he uses it, but he really didn't establish it this fight and when he did use it, it worked.
The guy has legit power. Say what you will of Szpilka's chin, that was a scary KO from one punch.
Szpilka showed how someone like Povetkin could beat Wilder. Move him backward, stay in his chest, rip the body and follow-up upstairs. Wilder's wiry frame gives him that Breland-like snappy power but leaves him vulnerable to body shots and guys who are physically strong and have a lower center of gravity.
Wilder is a very tough out for anybody in the division. He's not a great heavy as he relies a little too heavy on his power; and after tonight he might become more reliant on it seeing how it got him through a game opponent. He is a good heavy and deserves credit for staying focused eventually landed his money shot.
I just feel Povetkin can exploit some of the things we saw tonight.

I agree I think this fight definitely changed my initial opinion of the Wilder v povetkin match. Povetkin has a good enough pedigree to outbox Wilder without knocking him out.

I enjoyed the fight. People thought szpilka was going to be an easy fight. I myself said szpilka was going to test Wilder and he did tonite. On to Povetkin, the fight suddenly just got closer imo and I would probably even favor Povetkin to win, But how will he react when he gets hit Flush by a Wilder right hand? That's a serious question that Povetkin will have to answer. It's a great fight!

I gave brief consideration to going with Szpilka for the win actually, but I knew he'd never get a fair decision and dat chin:!:

--Knocked out badly by an unknown LHW in amatuers
--ALSO, OUTBOXED badly by a Polish Sausage in the amatuers
--Squeaked by with a bronze medal somehow in the Olympics
--Put down by morbidly obese Dustin "Big Worm" Nichols with a "Check-Jab"
--Put down heavily and almost out by career loser Harold "Hard Roc" Sconiers
--Built much of his career by beating sad corpses like Harrison and Lyakhovich
--Brought in personal friend Malik Scott to take an obvious dive
--Did not fight the real champ for his "title" but a Don King manufactured Buffet champion
--Knocked down by 2 Wlad jabs and OUT with one medium left hook in sparring
--Destroyed and almost ktfo'd by Haye in sparring
--Rocked heavily by a Firtha jab
--Could not defeat a very ill Stiverne as convincingly as Demetrice King
--Could not even knock a very ill Stiverne down like Rossy
--Some of the most shameful opponents for his "title defenses" that the world has ever seen, showing his low self esteem
--Rocked badly and almost out vs substitute teacher Molina ("Drummer Boy")
--He did not perform as well agasint Molina as Arreola OR ASHANTI JORDAN, both of whom knocked him out in 1
--Eye busted up and made to look like a gargoyle by Duhaupas ("The Reptile"), a French pastry chef
--Sold as a nice guy, but actually spends his time beating up hookers and mental patient Charlie Zelenoff, who are ironically his best opponents
--Dispresects great fighters like Tyson and Klitschko
--Now trying to claim that Fury's "courageous" win somehow makes him champion.
    --Avoiding Povetkin like the plague
--Seems to be using a new tactic, probably to mask steroid use, of not allowing his pathetic opponents a full camp
--Was considering Wawryck, knocked out in 3 by his mandatory, as an opponent
--Offered a shot to Adamek, a shot to pieces 39 year old former LHW who is 1-2 in his last three, but only allowed him a 6 week camp.
--Avoided Briggs and Bronco Billy Wright, shot fighters who carry AARP cards
--Will fight an unemployed Soccer Hooligan named Szpilka? on 4 weeks notice, and will underpay him, overfeed and hooker him up
--Wilder's team, the "Burger Squad", keeps removing and scrubbing the Internet of all of his shameful knockdowns and ktfo's; mostly while attempting a bad attempt at the "Ali Shuffle", which will now be called the "Burger Bungle".
--Got punked out badly by unemployed, fur coat wearing soccer hooligan Spzilka at face off for their upcoming "title" fight
--Was outboxed handily and rocked many times by Polish soccer Hooligan Spzilka amd won by a lucky punch...

Hold your horses this was just a stylistic anomally.
I wouldn't read much in to it, i think szpilka just being a lefty confused Wilder a bit, its a great learning experience for him and he will be better prepared to fight s lefty now.

Povetkin is made to order for Wilder he's just too easy to hit and too small.

Szpilkas chin is highly underrated. He took some flush shots from Wilder tonite and ate them like Mnm's. The shot that knocked him out was all weight and Wilder punched through him on the chin. That was brutal, and you're right the judges would have screwed him. I had it 5-3 Szpilka at the time he was KO'ed!
