For sheer volume of negative commentary on here, I don't think anyone gets more hatred than him. Some of it I understand to some extent, like opposition (his title defenses to this point have been well below average, although his frequency of defense is high and should mitigate that to some extent; and before his title shot, his eliminator was against Scott, which is more impressive now, but at the time was less so, and he hadn't fought any real contender before that). Some are just kind of silly though(kd'd before koing Sconiers, a tough journeyman who beat contenders McCline and Austin; slip or debatable kd against Nichols before stopping him, a bad fighter who admittedly Wilder looked silly against while he was showboating. But many fighters have been kd'd or looked silly against inferior opp at some point or another. Wlad, Pulev, Fury, Jennings, Glazkov, Thompson and Stiverne all come to mind as top 12 hws either tasting canvass or losing or barely winning against similar poor competition). My question, is it too far gone for Wilder, or are people willing to change their mind? If Wilder fights and beats Glazkov, then Povetkin next year, that would clearly establish him as the #2 hw and really the hw with by far the best resume and "on paper" chances to beat Wlad that Wlad has ever faced. I'm wondering if people would acknowledge that, or if they'd be trapped in their hatred of Wilder no matter what. I'm not saying that he will beat Glaskov and Povetkin, or even that he'll face them, but I do understand there is a possibility and that if he does, he'll have proven himself the best non K during the Klitschko era.
Wilder has plenty of supporters. Excalibur, St Pat, MVC. So I think should he win in January they and more of his supporters will be on here. It is true a vast majority of regular posters have turned sour on him and that is hard to come back from. He'll always have haters. He was managed EXTREMELY softly. His abilities look mediocre. Only time will tell but he has his work cut out for him. Fighting Molina level opposition really hurt his image.
If he beats Povetkin then he gets all respect in the world. Glazkov probably wouldn't mean much. But it's easy to see why people think he's a fraud. Who has he beaten really? Stiverne and Scott are the best guys he fought. Liakhovich was over the hill and Harrison was Harrison. One took a dive, the other looked damn near geriatric by fight night. Povetkin would be a big, big step-up.
Who would it be then? Right now I have Povetkin as #1 of the K era. Peter, Sanders, Haye and Chagaev right behind him. If Wilder beat those two, he'd have wins over 4 hw's arguably in top 10-15, Scott, Stiverne, Glazkov, and Povetkin. One of those the arguable prior best challenger of the K era. He'd also be undefeated. If he fought Wlad next I don't see any other challenger Wlad ever faced with remotely as good a resume.
Povetkin is No 2 HW, but Glazkov is on the edge of top ten. So, if DW defeat Povetkin - he will be among the three (Joshua, Usyk) serious Wlad's opponents.
That's the thing, will he even fight Povetkin or Glazkov? People hate on him because his resume is filled with bums on it. Also the fact he hasn't look impressive in some of his fights.
You know that for sure, huh? Povetkin deserves to be the favorite, but let's be real, Wilder winning wouldn't be a Douglas Tyson moment, Las Vegas would probably make Povetkin a fairly narrow favorite. And Scott has beaten Thompson (fringe top 10hw) Leapai (fringe top 30-35 hw) and drawn against Glazkov (fringe top 10 hw, and most felt Scott won the fight). So yeah, I'd say that in retrospect, the Scott win looks a lot better and that he was a fringe top 10 to 15 guy (he's ranked #7 in boxrec currently). And besides, my "arguments" aren't silly because I'm not arguing Wilder WILL do that, just that if he DOES, he'd deserve a ton of props
If he beat Povetkin, Joshua and Usyk (maybe Parker), he 'll be ruler of post-Klitschko era. But, it's very difficult to predict anything . In any case - he is extremely hard hitting dude, the key for his success is his chin/stamina, not fists............
LARGE, lol. But seriously. If he fights Povetkin alone, I'll give him respect, because that is a VERY dangerous fight for him. One he likely gets flattened for good in. But yes the RIDICULE would subside a bit
He can still make me a fan, at present I literally rate him as a joke. From fighting terrible comp and calling himself the heavyweight champ of the world. I mean if you are in boxing then you should know that wlad holds that title. Thing is I don't think he can make me a fan, beat povetkin, Jennings, pulev, whoever. He will avoid povetkin at ALL costs as a brutal ko will end the minor hype train.
The hate is crazy, you have guys like unleashtheautism going bat**** crazy over Wilder, but not a peep of criticism for Povetkin for not enforcing his mando in January, and delaying the fight by taking Wach .
