Did anybody else find it odd that wilder got 45 secs to recover after the bell rang? Either the guy can fight or he can’t. You check him during the round not 45 secs after.
I will say.... what a ****ing punch wilder took. Guy has an iron jaw for sure.

Wilder got exposed as being better than many gave him credit for.

 

Great post and spot on. It's why Wlad dropped him multiple times during sparring. Wilder gets by on his physical advantages in height and reach.
He looked awful tonight. Credit for hanging tough in the 7th round where the ref could of stopped it. He gave Wilder the benefit of the doubt (that many fighters don't receive)and Wilder pulled a rabbit out of his hat late against an old and tiring Ortiz.
Ortiz deserves credit as he went into his opponents back yard and out boxed him for 9 rounds while giving up height, reach and battling Father Time in addition to Wilder.

Tonight revealed no negatives on Wilder that weren't already out there from fights against lesser guys than Ortiz.

All that was revealed is on the plus side. A lot of people didn't think Wilder had that kind of blood and guts in him.

 

One right hook opened him up and he ate a big left on the ropes after it. I think he only took it because he was going backwards at the time which lessened the impact. But one shot did open him up. Wouldn't go as far to say he was exposed though.

 

Exactly. But pointing this out will be branded as “Whining” or “Just salty doe!”

And I definitely wouldn’t label his jaw as “Iron” but it’s sturdier than many thought. Iron jaws are GGG, Vitali, Tex Cobb, Ray Mercer etc. NOT Wilder. Lol

 

In the three years since Wilder-Stiverne I, less capable guys than Ortiz had already highlighted those shortcomings before being bombed out. I honestly don't think we came out with any new sticks to beat Wilder with, just proof that he has all the heart in the world and can deliver his power with effect against one of the better men currently around (even after being badly hurt and looking done in).

 

If someone wins and wins by KO then they're not exposed.

This was a step up for Wilder and fair dues to him for turning around a fight he was clearly losing. It's by far his best win - because Stiverne fought badly when he lost the WBC Title where Ortiz is the first guy to really have Wilder in any trouble - and goes a long way to legitimizing him and overriding the farce of his first 30 fights. So yeah, well done Wilder.

 

True, the same flaws I saw in his boxing against Szpilka and Washington were confirmed tonight. He relies heavily on his height and jab, but if you do what Ortiz and Szpilka did and feint him, you can feint him out of position which shuts him down offensively. Ortiz was also able to take away Wilder's jab by catching the jab with his lead right hand. Wilder definitely will always struggle with a southpaw.

Washington used a combination of feints and a very average but long jab to do the same. It's only when Wilder decides to stand his ground and lead does he become dangerous but at the same time vulnerable as we saw vs Ortiz.

Wilder was lucky that Ortiz's biggest flaw which is his inability to go through the gears and up his offense when needed kept him in the fight after the 7th. Wilder was very vulnerable in the 8th a more aggressive fighter would of finished Wilder in the 8th. But Ortiz can't put the kind of pressure on to finish it as he's more inclined to sit back and counter, so forcing the pace isn't in his make up as a fighter.
