Wilder has long been exposed. Only delusional fans of his can't see that. The man can't box. His skills are pitiful. An old flat footed fighter walked him down for the majority of the fight and outboxed him. Wilder has heart but I knew that since the Duhaupas fight. His chin is very suspect he was hurt for a long time yesterday. And he has a big right hand we knew that as well. Ortiz is a legit top 10 heavyweight so it's a good win for Wilder. On the flip side outside of his power which I already knew about he didn't impress me at all. He was badly outboxed while being much taller, with a much longer reach and being the much younger man. He now has 2 top 10 wins in 40 fights. Oh and Ortiz of just two years ago kos him
People who picked Wilder by decision were underrating Ortiz. I knew he was easily the better boxer and he'd get the better of Wilder both on the inside and on the outside. I picked Ortiz to win because I didn't think Wilder's durability and toughness would be enough. Kudos to him for proving me wrong on that, and for taking this fight in a voluntary defence.
I picked Wilder by decision. I don't think I underrated Ortiz though, if anything I overrated Wilder. I thought Wilder would struggle because Ortiz would likely takeaway his jab which he did, but I expected Wilder to use his speed and reach to pot shot and rack up points anyway and that Ortiz would be too slow to cut the ring off and be forced to lead and wouldn't get the opportunities to counter as much. What I hadn't anticipated was that Wilder would be so tentative and throw so little, Ortiz actually out worked him according to Compubox. I will add Wilder surprised me in how he was able to dig in and turn the fight around, that was impressive. He's done it against low level guys like Duhaupas and Molina but to do it vs Ortiz was unexpected.
wildeer didnt dig in, he just capilatised on people accepting a gassing old man as an opponent, hitting him when he was gassed out. Its not even a KO, its just hitting someone when they have become helpless.
About how I saw things transpiring. There is one big factor with Wilder he does not get enough credit for---he is the best conditioned heavy out there. Big big gastank with a nice reserve tank at his disposal. That factor alone is a problem to other heavies. Something to be said for keeping his weight low---in the time of 240 heavies. Being in great shape helps his cause. Imagine if he was 240 & he has a frame to put on 25 pounds. His balance would be worse and he'd fall in and the snap on his punches could disappear.
Wilder has that extra tank due to great conditioning and stamina. He impressed me by not wasting energy and even held off on the Windmill until the very end
He might not be a great boxer but that doesn't mean much when his opponent is knocked into bolivion......
Wilder was the fav with the bookies against a 40 year old man and he won. Wilder fans are shocked by this outcome!
Objectively speaking, Wilder doesn’t have many strings to his bow, but those that he does have are very good, namely power, foot speed (not foot work) and stamina. I came away from the fight respecting him more for coming through the 7th, but at the same time rating him less. The same thing happened with Joshua, when fighting Wlad. He came of age, and got so much respect, but people realised that he wasn’t this invincible fighter. Should he and Joshua fight, I see it going one of two ways; Joshua puts a beating on him and knocks him out, or Joshua puts a beating on him, but gets knocked out. The first being more likely, given the strings to his own bow.
