He is obviously working on the assumption that Fury is going to adopt the Kronk Style that he did in their second fight. I believe he in the second fight got the shock of his life when Fury flawlessly adopted the approach, he was not mentally prepared for it and couldn't believe it. This time he will be prepared for it. Based on the videos i am seeing of his work with Malik Scott, i see he is working on combination punching, body punches and moving his head, slipping hooks. I think he has to back the one thing which has gotten him here i.e. his power. He is never going to outbox Fury but he has to aim for the Knock out. Is there anything that he can do to negate the tactics that Fury employed in the second fight? He has to come in at 210-215 lbs as i feel that is his best weight as it gives him more speed, athleticism and ability to throw punches at a higher work rate. The fact he came in at 231 lbs hurt him badly. Fury is going to come in at 270-275 lbs and is going to use his size to drain him in the clinches and throw him around the ring. What can Wilder do to deal with this? I see he is lifting heavy logs.
The biggest thing for Wilder is Fury's feinting and twitching, he needs to not buy them.. He bought every one of them in the second fight, it cost him dearly. It immediately put him in the back foot and he reacted instead of acting. Also, If Wilder can learn to feint himself, HUGE, because Fury will move, he won't wait and see if Wilders right is on the way. But for me 3 main things (obviously easier said than done) Wilder just has to be aggressive and that's all about his mental side really, his attitude going in, he has to go in savage, Secondly let his hands go, don't wait on Fury, be confident and commit to his punches. Thirdly, do not by every feints and twitch, try and reverse it a little bit and feint himself, do not let Fury dictate the pace and when there is contact.
Wilder already did everything possible to win the first fight. He landed a monster combo in the last round. If you actually rewatch that combo i seriously doubt Wilder has more to offer than this. It was a monster combo: Right hand on the ear + left hook on the chin. Both flush. No gloves in play. No guard in play. Wilder actually landed one or two decent right hands in the second fight as well. And Fury didn't even blink. We all know that Fury will absolutely destroy Wilder in the third fight. Wilder is all about confidence. He was riding his streak and he was confident in his power being enough to win all those fights. He survived the 7th against Ortiz in the first fight where he was out on his feet for like 60 seconds and battered and came back to knock him out. Same int he second fight where Ortiz didn't lose a single round until Wilder knocked him out. Fury broke Wilder. In the first fight he was dropped twice and came back both times and in the second time he ragdolled Wilder from start to finish. I wouldn't be shocked if we see a stoppage inside 3-4 rounds this time.
He needs to find something to better cope with Fury's movement and set ups but he just doesn't have the tools for he job.
fury already beat him at that game. with his reach and extra weight to push off from, he was busting wilder up...in slow motion even. the good thing is(or bad, depending on how you look at it), is that as flawed as wilder is, he was still neck and neck with fury till he caught that shot on the ear. if he just improves 3 things, out of the dozens hes weak at, and he can get his trinket back. i would start with a proper guard. instilling that in him in camp will force him to put in work, cause you got to be in shape to maintain your hands in ready position for 12... if protecting your chin and staying upright wasnt incentive enough. next, i would teach him to dip and come over the top of furys jab, or any left for that matter. except that wide left hook fury likes to throw from the outside, you want to shoot a right straight down the line with everything on it against that one. get you inside that wide hook hes throwing and in a position to defend in case you missed. if wilder was smart, he would imprint a snapshot of what fury looks like when he begins to pull his arm out to throw that hook, and next time he sees that, just let that right go. dont even think about it. and third, i would drill him on bending his knees and dipping to the sides to avoid shots. not just get in a tight guard, stiff as a board so they can tee off on you. those 3 things alone would make him a new fighter.
I thought Wilder's plan would have been similar to what he did vs Ortiz ll - Don't bother wasting your energy trying to score points and fight, just wait for that perfect moment to launch a right hand. Read the opponents body language, and just wait. Wilder's gameplan for Fury 2 was terrible - He just launched himself at Fury and tried to fight toe to toe. There was nothing. The only thing he can do is watch the replays of his fights with fury, study his movement, and time the right hand better Timing the right hand well is LITERALLY all he has. There is literally not a single thing he can do differently other than improve on his one positive element. He could also, I suppose, work on that left jab a bit, but that's it.
Too little, too late. Wilder will probably not be able to adapt his style in less than a year to beat Fury. One thing is to make an adaptation, see how this work in a couple of lesser fights, where you don't have to worry about your opponent exploring every single existing flaw in your new gameplan, then display it against a though opponent. Another thing is to test how your new gameplan work against the best boxer and the single best counterpuncher in the division. Look at Pacquiao-Morales trilogy. Pacquiao lost the first fight, came up with solutions for the second fight, but first he tested it against Hector Velásquez.
Wilder just has to reduce his costume's weight from 556 pounds to 330 and then avoid being poisoned fun the time he arrives to the stadium until the final bell.
