What a fighter. Wish he had dedicated more of his time to his craft rather than to booze and the nose candy, as he would have been an even greater fighter than he was. Untold potential.
Curry might find the title of the video humorous. Truly he was very good but really he was a very flawed fighter and the way he fought lacked substance. I think he’s a touch overrated even as a big fan the way he gets talked about you’d think he was the second coming of Napoles…
He was very reckless, as soon as he had money he was destined to be poor again. He almost killed himself roaring around in a sports car after his first taste of success. I take that as an analogy for his career Wilfredo was a new super sport with someone on there L’s behind the wheel.
Note, he's not making just any average fighters look silly at times. He's making ATG'S like Leonard, Hearns, Duran , Cervantes, and Palomino foolish. Though Leonard and Hearns did beat him, they had to really work for it. And not just physically but mentally too. That's the difference in fighters of the past and fighters today. Benitez started young and trained until it was instinctive. As most ATG'S did in the past. Because if a fighter is "Thinking" about slipping, parrying, or blocking he is hit as a old trainer told me 40yrs ago. One must train to the point of instinctive. The skill level of those fighters will never be seen again. Fighters are not pushed as hard for safety reasons of course.
I see your reasoning but the issue with Benitez instinctive as it may have been those reflexive movementsoften pulled him out of position to capitalise and he swung so far back or out that he couldn’t act on the situation without compromising.
Maybe on these highlights. But watch any of his old fights when he was at the top of his game. He'd counter punch the hell out of opponents. Only the very best. Leonard and Hearns were capable of making him almost completely defensive when he was prime.
The Fifth King. Wilfred was a great fighter who was on the cusp of becoming one of the VERY great ones. As has been said,if he'd been more disciplined he would have been talked about in the same breath as Duran,Hagler,Hearns and Leonard. I was quite a fan of his although he pissed me off with his callous attitude after knocking out Maurice Hope.
Post Hearns Benitez started to fade and shouldn`t have moved up to 160 either, I mean he started his career at 140.
