I went back and watched this fight and i forgot how good of a fight this was an excellent scrap, i think Benitez was very fortunate not to be stopped and alot of modern referees would've stopped the fight. Benitez literally had no legs in rounds 4 and 5 i'm not quite sure how he got through it TBH.

A few things to note this fight was scored on a round basis not the 10 point must system this is how i scored it......

    1 Curry
    2 Benitez
    3 Curry
4 Curry scores 2 knockdowns great round
    5 Curry scores a knockdown
    6 Curry
    7 Benitez
    8 Curry
    9 Benitez
    10 Benitez

In rounds i had it 6-4 for Curry but if i was using 10 point must system Curry would win by a landslide 96-92. I think Benitez did get a huge gift here and the 7-3 scorecard for Benitez is baffling in all honesty a horrible scorecard.

Funnily enough Curry was a substitute for Duran i wonder how that would've panned out ? i know Benitez did actually beat Duran when they fought. But i don't think Benitez beats Duran in 1977 especially not in the form he was in vs Curry.

But all in all a great fight but a huge gift for Benitez no way he deserved to win this no matter what scoring system you use.

One of the worst decisions of the decade. Leonard-Benitez billed as a fight between two undefeated fighters Pfffffftt.

Benitez could be really inconsitent, even in his prime. He fell off a cliff after the Duran victory. And I agree, at WW the fight between them at their best would be really competitive.

How did you score the Cervantes victory? It's a very close fight as well.

Yeah even using rounds system I don't see how anyone thought Benitez won this the 7-3 scorecard was criminal. Considering how bad judging was I would've been interested to see how they could've robbed Curry using 10 point must system.

I've seen Cervantes fight a long time ago never scored it though, I'm watching alot of Benitez fights atm. When I rewatch that particular fight I'll @ you in the scorecard thread.

Benitez beat him fair in the second fight althought it was a close one.Curry was the only one that decipher Benitez style early in his career.Styles makes fights.

Allgreat fighters got fights like that. Ali vs Doug Jones, Duran got beat silly in his first fight with Viruet and yet he got the nod.De la hoya vs the german that i can't remember right now and the list goes on

Viruet wasn't even close to a draw, let alone a victory. He just got benefit of home judging. (Same for that ridiculous 7-3 card against Dejesus)

De la hoya vs sturm was controversial but it was a close fight nonetheless.

This must one of the few times a fighter who got knocked down thrice in a 10 rounder won a wide decision.

No, the first fight wasn't close either. I don't think Viruet landed more than 5 punches in any around (except maybe the 10th). Duran was constantly hitting him with hard shots whenever he got in.

Didn't Bruce change his name to Curry Fuji at one point?

Benitez was overconfident and fought a dumb fight. He was winning early but stood toe to toe with the harder punching Curry. He got caught as he tried to land his own punch. He basically walked into a punch and was badly hurt. It took him a few rounds to fully recover. Mercante could have stopped the fight as benitez was in terrible shape.

In the second fight Benitez fought much smarter and won an uneventful decison.

For a fighter known for his defense Benitez did take alot of punishment in his career, that's probably why he ended up so bad in later life.

I had Benitez winning the rematch 7-2-1 BTW.

yes, he had the capability of avoiding punishment but in this case just got very careless.

That, and starting so disgustingly early. You can't have little kids like that taking hits repeatedly the way his sadistic father had him doing. That's the brain's formative time.
