Benitez was still pretty green when he won his first title at 140 while Chavez Sr peaked in that weight class. Who wins it?
I say Benitez uses his defensive abilities and slickness to get the decision win Whitaker should've had.
He was young, but his performance against Cervantes showed his class. Benitez was one of the champions who peaked earliest, even moreso than Tyson. That said, I'm not sure he had the movement, consistent jab, or power to derail Chavez for too long, though he could likely hold his own off the ropes on the inside. Benitez showed that he could be very good at mid-range and I think he could box on even terms, if not get the better of Chavez there. I'm just not sure how long it would be at that pace.
Chavez probably gets to him over 15...The 12 round distance gives Wilfredo a much better chance (thats not to say he couldnt handle the 15 round distance, he was actually was proven over it and Chavez wasnt but I think the 12 rounds distance would be better for him in this particular fight)..Could be a toss up there but I would go with the experience of Chavez to find a way.
I'm leaning towards Chavez as well, i actually don't think his finest work was done at the weight, and it looked more and more so that at this weight, fighters were having more and more success standing with him and trading bombs. But as we know that's not Benitez, and i just think Chavez' immense exparience of fighting people retreating from him would tell very late, where he is behind on points though i must say. He'll be outspeeded and even putpunched by that point.
As you say, Benitez was a great fighter from an early age but he lacked experience at 140 & your putting him against a Chavez with 80 fights under his belt, I think Benitez hangs on for a pts loss similar to what Camacho did, not as clear a victory as that one tho, much closer, any other weight Id pick Benitez clearly. Chavez UD12 Benitez
The experience factor isn't much of an issue, in my honest opinion. I think people are making too big a deal out of it. Why not just use it every time Benitez is brought up in a fantasy matchup? The guy was clearly a phenom in how young he was able to develop his skills and ring savvy, as he proved against Cervantes. It's possible Chavez lacked the extra dimension or attribute to his game to beat a guy like Benitez.
Benitez fought tons of gym wars as a teen, so the experience was there, this is also why he peaked early the man was one of the most gifted and tragic fighters ever. I would have to go with Benitez who called himself the " Bible of Boxing " and who others called " The Radar" in a close decision.
That was not an old, shot, washed up Roberto Duran that Benitez cooly outclassed in 1982...I esteem Wilfred very highly on the basis of that bout...I would say, again, as I just voted, that Benitez, before he lost it all, and his coach turned back into a pumpkin, defeats Chavez by a slightly closer margin than he did Duran over 15 rounds.
I thought Benitez looked his best ever against Cervantes. After that he fell in love with the nightlife and became an "on and off"er. I'm not so sure Chavez's best weight was 140. He seemed like he might've been stronger there than he was at the lower weights, but not as quick or versatile.
