I disagree with Benitez winning easy. De La Hoya's track record suggests that he gave everyone a tough match. He had that ability and talent to compete evenly. Even past prime he gave Mayweather a good fight. He gave Whitaker, who was past prime a good fight. I think he would give Benitez a hell of a fight.

    :good, Nice post..

Oscar gave Hell to everyone he fought, he was winning when Hopkins knocked him out with the body shot, and by the time Paq got him buy 2008 Oscar wasn't even a boxer anymore, he was more businessman, his heart wasn't into fighting anymore:-(

Call me crazy but I pick Oscar to win a UD over 12 or 15.

Benitez was brilliant defensively against the right but would be more vulnerable to a left-hand dominant fighter like De la Hoya's jab and occasional hooks.

Oscar would let go with combos and most wouldn't land clean but some of them would get through, and Benitez had trouble getting off against rangy fighters with good jabs like Leonard and Hearns.

To me this is a styles-make-fights pick.

Great match -up. I see Oscar handing it to Benitez over the first half of the fight, Oscar had the skill, speed and power to overwhelm Wilfred, Oscar will not land much clean, and will expend all his energy over the first 6 rounds and begin to tire,
Wilfred and Oscar will fight evenly for the mid rounds as Oscars tank depletes.

But this fight goes for 15 rounds, not 12 and the amount of energy Oscar will lose is going to catch him in the later rounds. I see Benitez possibly knocking out an exhausted Oscar in the 14th to 15th round. If De Lahoya survives he will end the fight looking like a rag doll. If I was a betting man, I would just slightly favor Oscar but I don't feel at all comfortable, and would be at the edge of my seat the final rounds .

I assume that this bout would be a 15 rounder....as all title fights should be. It's in the realm of the 15 round distance that Benitez would close the deal.....Oscar would be very tired and Benitez, as mentioned earlier, could very well have stopped his man in 14 or 15....I also agree that Oscar vs Carlos Palomino would be a more evenly contested bout.

I think it would be a hell of an interesting fight, but more of a boxing session than people would expect and Benitez would win largely because of his superior defense.

This is a great match up btw.

I remember watching a DeLaHoya fight once where he actually said in a post fight interview, "Y'see, rounds 11 and 12 are what we call the championship rounds..." Seriously, I just groaned when I heard that. I thought to myself, 'Buddy, you have no idea what the championship rounds are.'

I agree with this. I see Oscar up early and then fading down the stretch as he runs out of steam.

Benitez over Oscar in a good fight.
