The brilliance of a young Gomez winning his first world title. Outside of positioning/balance early he is near perfection in this fight. Brilliant use of uppercuts all fight, crouching down getting solid torque and leverage delivers them the body as well. His defense was solid to exceptional all fight long. Come enjoy the brutal brilliance of a young and hungry Gomez! This content is protected
Gomez was a little too excited and impatient early on and it got him decked for his troubles. But once he'd settled in to his boxing he eventually turned it in to a very impressive performance where he seemed to get better with every passing round. In the first two or three rounds (aside from being floored) Gomez was accepting the clinches, throwing big singles which weren't always effective etc., but by round 4 or so he'd started working the high-low, putting combinations together and refusing the clinches, really going to work in close. Better head movement and control of distance than people often remember. Decent boxer, Dong, but too limited to handle a young, hungry Gomez like the one we saw here. Nice footwork, good mover, sharp jab....But too negative and limited with his arsenal to stand a chance. Probably should have been spared the finishing assault by his corner or the referee, who could have even pulled him out between rounds (the eleventh was close to being a 10-8). But yep, Gomez showing that he was more than just a brute with heavy hands. Still a dirty, classless sod in the ring, mind you, but he sure could fight.
