Because he was horribly mismanaged in a much tougher era.

Canelo would really have struggled in Benitez’ era.

    No Canelo-weight.

    No Khan’s to fight.

Just straight up sharks at MW-LHW.

It was the speed and power that made him cautious.

He still gave him a great fight.

And he didn’t just shell up all night against Hearns either.

Then there was the great performance against Duran.

Please. Canelo would never go life and death with the Harold Weston’s and Bruce Curry’s if the world.

    Please?

    Canelo struggled with Austin Trout.

I keep telling you, that with a same day weigh-in, his huge rehydration weights and no SMW division, if Canelo fought in the 70’s and 80’s, he’d have been fighting at MW-LHW.

Now go and look at who was fighting at those weights in that era.

There would have been some horrific match ups for him at both weights.

Canelo would have had it much harder than today.

Canelo didn’t struggle with Trout and Trout was an undefeated champion who had just beaten Cotto. See my last post.

    It’s easy to say this.

At the end of the day, Floyd was past his prime at WW, and he never faced anyone as skilled in his career.

We’re talking here about a guy who easily beat Duran, and who was competitive with Leonard and Hearns.

A guy of a similar size, with comparable attributes.

Who was a true technician himself.

Two defensive counterpunchers with elite level skills.

It all points to a cautious chess match, where both guys would have respected each other.

As others have said, it may have been boring.

I think that Floyd would have been cautious.

Also, in the majority of his fights at WW, he was much more cautious with a more limited offense, then when he was ‘PBF’ at the lower weights.

A faded Oscar gave him all he could handle with his jab. And he was one of the best boxers who Floyd fought.

I can’t see any evidence where Floyd could have won this fight comfortably.

I also don’t see where Benitez could easily have won either.

It would have been an intruiguing fight. But one for the purists.

I’m not interested in your opinion of the fight.

We’ve already discussed it numerous times.

Trout was a B level guy who’s claim to fame was beating a faded Cotto.

Now let’s get down to it.

Tell me how Canelo would have fared at MW-LHW, back in the 70’s and 80’s.

I’m asking you here, because you have avoided the question numerous times on the other thread.

Look at some of his potential opponents.

    He’d have struggled.

Of course but speed can be deadly because the punches you don’t see are the ones that hurt you. A lot of the shots Benitez was getting caught/hurt with were shots he didn’t see.

I personally thought Leonard dominated him. Put on a master class. Against Hearns he started opening up late but way too late. Hearns was already way ahead on points IMO. I don’t consider Duran (especially the one Benitez fought) to be a fast fighter.

I'm debating whether Benitez wins any rounds or not. Floyd is much faster, better timing, longer arms, better defense and a much better inside fighter. Much better stamina too. If Benitez boxes Floyd it totally plays into his hands and he just gets picked apart. If he jabs, I doubt he trebbles it coming forward and I see Mayweather throwing the counter right over the top. I think style wise Benitez is most comparable to Judah or Marquez. But Judah had a speed advantage over Floyd, where as Benitez has a big disadvantage.

It's also worth remembering Mayweather was fighting much heavier opponents than Benitez. In Benitez day boxers came into the ring weighing the fight weight. Mayweather faced weight drainers who blew up to 166lbs in the case of Maidana IIRC. When Mayweather fought smaller mobile boxers his own size he walked them down and lay a beating on them. See Judah, Mitchell, Corley. Even aggressive boxers his own size tended to get walked down, see Hatton, Chavez, Gatti, Manfredy. Benitez is lighter and not as strong as Floyd's WW opponents, that means Floyd can probably feel free to bring out his full arsenal.

Its sparring talk but apparently Floyd outboxed Whitaker, take that with a pinch of salt

What do you disagree with? Did you know Bruce Curry dominated Benitez, outboxing him and knocking him down 3 times? Only for Benitez to get a gift decision?

    Come on man.

    Your post is ridiculous.

You can’t see Benitez winning a round?

Floyd never saw anybody as gifted as ‘El Radar’

Was past his prime at WW, where he had a more limited and cautious offence for the most part.

Struggled with a faded, end of career Oscar.

Yet he’d have just breezed by him like he was nothing?

    No.

    Totally unrealistic.

It would probably have been a cautious chess match.

Look at the competition in 80s, 90s, and 2000s and compare it to what Crawford and Canelo had to face. Neither would be as dominant in those eras.
