I willl post what I posted on there on the other thread which was rather subjective in regards to what is Duran's greatest wins.. If this is what is needed a more fair thread, but I don't think it will go anywhere because Benitez does not have the backing of Duran, even though he won that fight very convincingly. Benitez never got the credit for beating Duran. Thanks for awknowledging this. So with that said. I will post what I said if you want to make a thread. Ok I started off saying this to a post. "Wilfred Benitez does not get enough credit for beating Duran." then followed by responses to other posters as follows below.

No real point. Just fairness. And Benitez beat him very well in the same era and before fights people say Duran did great. And the same appreciation does not go to him. Hearns gets credit for beating Duran but Benitez does not. That was my point.

That was a good year for Benitez. In 1982 he fought two legends for his title. Even though he lost with Hearns, he went 15 and really was not out of that fight. Hearns just used his jab and controlled it on the outside. Hearns might have been fortunate to hurt his right during the fight because had he become more reckless who knows if Benitez could have landed a Maurice Hope right hand or anything. He was quick.

I rarely start threads. I like being fair and this means being fair to Benitez who was relatively overlooked in relation to the fab 4, and that loss by Duran to Benitez was again overlooked. Granted this is about Duran's wins, but Wilfred was in the middle of all those fights with Leonard and Laing and Moore and Hagler. I don't consider this Duran hate as much as Duran truthfulness. Benitez win over Duran was as great as any of Duran's wins because of styles and 15 rounds for Duran to get something going. Wilfred gets underrated here.

I don't see it like this at all and I do not think I have ruined this thread or any other thread in regards to Duran. Revisionism is not something which is fair to everyone so I would think Benitez could be mentioned even on this thread. I don't think the thread has been hijacked by my comment or swayed away from Duran. All I wanted to mention was Benitez who is overlooked probably because he lost to Leonard and Hearns when wins over those two would have given him the status the other fab 4 got. The Benitez win over Duran was a win which has been overlooked and forgotten, and it should not. Not in the context of this thread.

Benitez greatest win could be Duran. Significant Cervantes, but you could be right why discuss Benitez here I guess. Well because it is part of boxing history and Duran's history to understand the wins before and after this.
I think discussing Duran both ways give us a better understanding of Duran the fighter. Weaknesses and strengths. I just want it to be fair. People are talking about Duran in regards to Moore or Hagler or Leonard, and yet Benitez was not mentioned at all even though he was right in the middle and for a title at those weights. Very significant to this discussion.

I have said before that Duran was the greatest instinctive fighter ever, even instinctive when he knew he was losing or going to.

Do you think the Duran fight is his best ever. He had a lot. Cervantes at the time he lost to Benitez was regarded by many as the 2 or 3 best in boxing according to the mags. He was a scary fighter. Benitez absolutely destroyed Randy Shields who Pipino. Ray. Tommy couldn't do anything with. He won going away against Palomino and was awesome against Hope, who I feel was twice the fighter Kalule was. Most people think Hope stopped Vito on cuts, he did not. Maurice had Vito sailing down ***** street and about to be 10 counted.
So what to you are his best? He looked great vs Curry the second time also.

It’s funny how Duran and his backers have an excuse for every loss but when anybody says anything about a win Duran and his backers say “no excuses”. I like Duran and I enjoyed his autobiography but grew tired on his having an alibi or two on every loss.

Whatever happened to one fighter just plain having a flat performance? Happends to the best of them. Benitez looked like a million bucks against Duran not taking that away from him. He fought brilliantly his best IMO. Those who watched Durans career could also tell he didnt have the spark that night. I'm NOT implying he would have won if he was firing on all cylinders but he obviously wasnt that night. As far as Benitez ve Palomeno that was a one or two point fight IMO. Benitez Dad was up his ### getting him motivated because Wilfred was fading physically and mentally in that fight. Again great performance by Wilfred. All props to him. One of the first boxers I looked up too.

Where are all you Duran detractors who constantly bring up Benitez in Duran praising threads? Where are the new posts by @Saad54 and @PernellSweetPea ? C'mon guys! Don't wait for a Duran praising thread.

Benitez was a great fighter. He was naturally bigger than Duran and Duran never really excelled against the best boxers over 147. He was still a terrific fighter who could take most apart thru 160 but not the best boxers like Leonard or Benitez. Styles make fights and 31 year old 154 pound Duran didn’t have the legs, stamina or sustained speed to beat that prime Benitez. However I feel the Duran of Montreal at 29 at 147 beats the Wilfredo that beat Palimino.
