Classic example of the "revered" Champ taking one fight too many:

1986-05-24 : Wilfredo Gomez 130 lbs lost to Alfredo Layne 129 lbs by TKO at 0:32 in round 9 of 15
    • WBA Super Featherweight Title (1st defense by Gomez)
    Notes:
    • Gomez's physician, Dr. Bobby Munoz Zayas, advised him to retire "for his health's sake" after he defeated Rocky Lockridge by a controversial decision to win the WBA super featherweight title in May 1985.
    • Gomez's mandatory title defense against Layne, the No. 1-rated contender, had been put off three times due to Gomez's indecision about his future.
    • Layne floored Gomez with a straight right to the chin at the end of the eighth round. Gomez rose on unsteady legs and was helped to his corner by his seconds. The one-minute rest period was not enough time for Gomez to recover. At the start of the ninth round, Layne immediately went after a still-dazed Gomez and backed the champion to the ropes. The fight was stopped when Gomez went down face-first after getting hit by another straight right.
    • Gomez was out of the ring for 26 months after losing to Layne. He would fight twice more, winning both fights by knockout.
    • Layne fought eight times after defeating Gomez and lost seven of the bouts. He lost the title in his first defense to Brian Mitchell by a 10th-round TKO and fought his remaining bouts as lightweight and super lightweight. Layne was shot to death in his native Panama in 1999 at age 39.

I dont think Gomez gets enough credit for just how tough he was. I though Lockridge beat him. Definitely one fight too many here.

I believe he did. Lockridge gets very overlooked IMO

I started to watch that vid, but had to stop a few seconds in to it...it's waaay too sad. Like watching Louis get slaughtered by Marciano. That sure wasn't the once great Bazooka Gomez in there...nothing but a ghost of himself.

Appears Gomez was leading in the fight early....then faded. Plus, he was fighting over
    his prime lower weight.
