"No one interested"? Are you kidding? This could quite possibly be the mythical "fight of all fights". I don't think I remember this fight being considered before on the forum. I can't even say right now, maybe later after considering it a while. To split hairs a bit, it may be Jofre ar 118 and Gomez at 122. Jofre was the greatest 118 pounder ever in my opinion, but he got topped eventually by Harada, which was either a weight issue of Jofre's, or just a bad chemistry of styles in his inability to deal with the great Japanese Buzzsaw Harada. Gomez, on the other hand, was just untouchable, unbeatable at 122. When he was at 122 he was like a mutant invader from another galaxy against those poor guys, especially the great Carlos Zarate. Beating an alltime great like Zarate the way he did was incredible, IMO. I can't make up my mind yet. I'm interested in what the other posters have to say first.
Can't see Gomez being very strong at 118. I think it would ruin him lol. I agree with you on Gomez's destruction of Zarate, who never looked in the fight and was devestated by Gomez's arsenal. He kepts getting up, but when his corner stopped it the look on his face said it all. He had no idea who he had been fighting, it was like a whirlwind assault!
To me, Gomez at 122 was a more complete fighter and even more dominant than Roberto Duran. He was a bit colder and detached than Roberto was, but that didn't hold true for him after he rose up in weight. I think his prime was restricted to the 122 class.
I deffo go with Gomez here. The way he dealt with Zarate was spellbinding, even amid claims Carlos was sick.
I picked Gomez by decision. I have a guideline (not a hard fast rule) when picking these fantasy fights. Unless I've seen an ATG stopped at least once, I have a hard time picking him to be stopped. Jofre took a lot of shots from Harada, Medel and others I'm sure. I think Jofre definitely has the edge in chin and durability, but I think Gomez would make it through. Gomez - Zarate always reminds me of Foreman - Frazier. Just a brutal beatdown involving ATG's. It even had Zarate (like Frazier) involuntarily retreating from the onslaught, almost turning his back. I'd never question the heart of either guy, I just think they got knocked silly.
Very good points. Like you say (at least the way I've interpreted it) Zarate was not out of his depth at all, just came across a man who was going to beat him no matter what he did.
Wait, who the hell said Gomez had a weak chin? If a post-Sanchez Gomez can take that kind of a beating from a guy like Pintor only to come up victorious in the later rounds, I don't think a prime Gomez's durability would be in question in this fight.
His chin wasn`t really solid SP, although I agree it isn`t weak per se. But he could be hurt and rocked as his chin wasn`t particularly sturdy, however his recuperative powers and most important of all his heart/indomitable will is what saw him through when he got his bell rung. As for how a bout between Gomez and Jofre would`ve unfolded, I think Gomez is the safe pick here as he was at his best weight here and at his peak he was a formidable fighter. I love Eder as a fighter but he would be hard pressed to catch up to the elusive, cat-like Gomez at this weight, plus Wilfredo had a good pair of legs which would serve him well against the slower footed Brazilian. Jofre mounts a late rally and makes it close in the end, but he wont be able to overcome the early lead Gomez will have built up by the late rounds to turn the tide on the cards.
Why not? Pintor didn't hit as hard as Jofre. You're basing your assessment of Gomez's chin all on one fight. Outside of that, he has a bit of a history of being down and/or wobbled by not-so-great punchers.
Not really, he was down and hurt against Dom Yum who was no puncher, he was wobbled a couple of times by Derrick Holmes, and he was floored straightaway against Sanchez (something you almost never saw Sanchez do) and stopped quicker than any other Sanchez opponent in a title match. And that's just what I can remember off the top of my head. Saying Gomez had a "very good" chin is actually a bit generous to him.
What a match-up! Jofre's best was at BW. Though this is not to say that he didn't do all right as a Fe.W. Which means that he would have been great at 122 too. Gomez was just about right for this weight. I am really torn. But I will lean, just about, towards a pts. win by Jofre. I feel that he had the better total package. Very good question to ask, Flea. :good
Gomez was never once close to being stopped at 122lbs and he was more durable then Cotto he recovered quicker and was never wobbled by a puncher on Malignaggi scale. He looked very different at 126lbs it might have been a small change in weight but it made a big difference for Wilfredo and we are talking about this match up being at 122.
