Great match up Fenech by decision. He outworks Gomez down the stretch. He has the chin, physical strength and conditining to stand up to Gomez for the duration.
I give Fenech almost an even chance here. He was just starting to gain some serious traction and his strength was INSANE. You only have to look at the way he used to bully and manhandle people, it's there for all to see. Gomez loved being in control and Fenech would take that away from him. Let Gomez dictate and you are a goner. Fenech was ahead of his time in that he used to put on a crazy amount of weight post weigh in even under the old rules. He had a lot of street fighter in him and loved to get down and dirty. Gomez is also rather adept at this. Fenech would get chest to chest and hammer it out in the trenches no holds barred. He would negate a lot of Gomez' power and skill. Gomez would never have seen so much determination and aggression. Wilfredo was also a fine inside fighter however and could deliver serious power in there. It all boils down to whether Fenech can take what Gomez dishes out inside. If Gomez is going to get him out of there it would happen in the first 6 rounds or so imo. If he doesn't Fenech could win a decision or stop him late. It's an amazing matchup.
Magic fight. Gomez was basically unbeatable at 122, but Fenech was just so relentless and strong. It's hard to pick an outright winner here...but I'd love a ticket for this fight. I think it would be an absolute classic.
Gomez will increasingly time Fenech. I envision Fenech winning the first few rounds because of this, but Gomez's growing work on the outside will be key. Fenech actually in-fights more in bursts, it gives more than enough time for Gomez to impose his gameplan. I think people over the years have come to romanticise his ruggedness because of how good his bursts were, assuming he is constantly like this. Fenech's problem was that when he was boxing (majority of the time), he would be a little too over-reactive to feints and gave away his patterns too easily. Gomez TKO 11.
Yeah, this is the key I think. That version of Gomez didn't use his legs (or didn't have them any more). He was more susceptible by then, and THAT version of Gomez loses to Fenech, probably by decision. The version of Gomez that moved more, as in against Zarate or Davila, etc., is just too much for Fenech to catch often enough. That Gmoez stops Fenech.
Fenech granted, would give Gomez a tough fight,...but no tougher than Pintor did,...and the results would be the same, as Gomez would eventually stop Fenech...maybe by round 11 or 12. Gomez at 122 was in a class by himself...superior to Fenech.
Excellent matchup but I like Fenech in this one. So strong and relentless, I think he would neutralize a lot of Gomez's strengths and take control of the fight.
