I've seen a few of his fights but know little about his opponnents besides the big ones (Sanchez, Nelson, Pintor etc) and was curious as to how good his general oppenents where? I'm going to try and watch as much of his WBC bantamweight run as much as possible and would like to know how good his opponents where in the scheme of things. I'm trying to brush up on my awareness of small guys and Gomez, with his aggressive style and huge punch, seems as entertaining a place as to start. Any output as to his less profile wins would be appreciated as I recognise few names around that weightclass, as that time. Thanks
Kobayashi and Zarate are good fights to see how destructive yet aesthetically pleasing he was. Wilfredo was one of the best fighters you can watch from his BW reign though he fizzled out when moving up. Great fighters and very skillful. Recommend Mendoza & Meza fights too but you never go wrong watching BW Gomez.
The Zarate fight was in San Juan, and he hit Zarate while Carlos was down. Gomez should have been DQ'ed, or at worst had the fight ruled as a No Contest.
That dirty Gomez lolatsch. Maybe a pt deduction but I'd have to go back to that fight. Would've beaten Zarate anyways. Doesn't change the fact that Gomez was dirty.
Slight change of topic but ive been watching some Fenech fights recently. Jeff Fenech loved hitting guys when down, regardless of how bad he was beating them
Whom I believe he also hit while down. ...............Just bringing it back around to the topic at hand.
He was a dirty mofo, no doubt. He hit or attempted to hit several guys when down. But that does not erase the fact that he put those guys down with incredible skills and they weren't going to escape anyway. I loved seeing Sanchez dismantle him, but in his prime at his prime weight (122), he was a great, great fighter. Check out the Derrick Holmes and Kobayashi fights for a couple more prime Gomez efforts.
One thing I find interesting with Gomez is that for such an obviously talented fighter, his jab was weak. It really wasn't even a jab, but more of a pawing range finder to set up his power shots. It's not a criticism or anything, it worked for him, but I find it interesting nonetheless. Gomez didn't seem interested in outboxing a guy; rather, he was looking to bomb his opponent out. About him fighting dirty...he did, but although sometimes he was deliberate in dishing out low blows or punches after the bell, I believe that sometimes it was just a case of him being so intense and fighting with such passion, that he sometimes just got too wrapped up in it all. That's what I love about Gomez...that intense passion that he fought with. I had to laugh in the LaPorte fight, where, in between giving LaPorte a good hiding, he was cursing at Hector Camacho in LaPorte's corner. :rofl That's classic stuff.
I agree. Technically, he should have been DQ'ed. But brave, if not utterly mental, would be the ref to do so, in that cauldron.
