A fighter with great knockout power, a very aggressive style, a true fight anyone attitude. He was active, campaigned in numerous weight classes and was relevant at a world level for a very, very long time. There's literally nothing not to love about the man, and the fighter he was. Behold, Wilfredo Vasquez! This is the same Jae-Won Choi who just upset Antonio Cermeno, who would go on to himself upset Vasquez. A good example of how styles make fights and how A-B-C logic simply doesn't work in boxing. This content is protected
I remember this fight. Vasquez could be inconsistent, but he could be a scary proposition when he was on.
When do you recall him under performing, before he was well into his 30's that is. I've seen him caught cold and taken out in 1, but I don't really consider that being inconsistent... more like his resume was full of killers, from one of the Galaxy brothers to Naseem Hamed.
I always liked Vasquez, good fighter. Choi did not react well to those punches and Vasquez didn't even really turn on the first one. I always confuse Antonio Cermeno with Hector Arcero-Sanchez.
Sadly Wilfred Vasquez like Eusebio Pedroza Vasquez is largely remembered by the casual fan for losing their fights in the twilight of the career. But Vasquez like Pedroza was o such much better than that. Once again tks Russell for highlighting fighters in the lower divisions who deserve so much better legacy wise.
No problem juppity, and thank you for your post. It's nice to know there are other fans out there that "get it". To me Vasquez is clearly a greater Puerto Rican fighter than the likes of Miguel Cotto.
