    Weird how Vasquez went on to have such a longer run than Contreras. Contreras could bomb, tho.

    I feel he's a legitimately great lower weight puncher, and his power didn't seem to fade at all from like 115-122. Hellacious punches.

    Contreras is one of the most underrated punchers of the lower weight classes of the past 30 years. Nuclear power+precision.

    I saw this fight live at the time on USA Tuesday Night fights. It was a big upset as Vasquez was well established and Contreras was fairly unknown outside of Latin America. Just a perfect counter right off the ropes.

    Contreras did go on to beat the tough Luisito Espinoza for the WBA 118 lb. title but fizzled out shortly thereafter, being upset by the defensively deficient Eddie Cook in a major upset. He was not heard from again after that loss.
