Arrellano is walking straight to Vazquez, using jab feints. Vazquez plays matador, sticking the jab and falling back. Arrellano grins and comes in, swiping Vazquez's eyes with hooks. Vazquez flurries and circles into a corner, then holds when Arrellano catches up to him. Vazquez shoves off, bouncing away. Arrellano jabs the body from too far out. Vazquez twitches back, then counters with a jab over Arrellano's head, grabbed low.

Round 4

Arrellano is hurrying away from Arrellano, sticking out defensive jabs. Arrellano is roughing Vazquez up on the inside, working uppercuts into the ribs leaning in and wrestling Vazquez's arms down to clear a path for jabs and chops. Vazquez shoves Arrellano onto the ropes and lands a 1-2. Arrellano spins out onto the Tecate logo, with Vazquez now risking getting backed onto the ropes. Vazquez runs. Arrellano walks him down, ducking a right hand. Big right by Arrellano, stuffed through Vazquez's guard and knocking him back onto the ropes.

3 & 4 were close. First two clear as day.

So a 39-37 swing either way could actually be argued.

 

WBC open scoring announced, even though it's only an eight rounder.

I couldn't make out what they were. One card had a draw (trenta oche trenta oche), it sounded like...and the other two were 39-37 but I'm not sure for whom.

 

Round 5

Arrellano is knocked into the ropes by a big left hook from a suddenly invigorated Vazquez. Big power flurry by Vazquez, headhunting, blocked. Arrellano is keeping his guard up and bending his neck, letting his head fall out of reach as Vazquez jabs at him. Arrellano is winging left hooks up top and working right uppercuts on the body leaning in on Vazquez, most of it blocked. Overhand right on the back of the head by Vazquez. Body shots by Arrellano. Big hooking combo by Vazquez, swinging wildly. Clinch.

This is way better than expected, if a bit messy.

 

Round 6

Arrellano is forcing Vazquez to trade, landing jabs and uppercuts. Vazquez backs him off with clanging rights on the skull from above and left hooks on the top of the trunks. Arrellano is caught by a right hand trying to trap the hands of Vazquez and pull them down to initiate some infighting. Big hooks on either side of the body by Vazquez, breathing heavily. Vazquez is winded, slapping. Vazquez flops in and holds. Arrellano shoeshines the body. Break. Arrellano is stalking. Vazquez runs, using the entire ring, cleaving to the ropes. body shots by Arrellano. Right hand up top by Vazquez, missing. Vazquez holds.

Round 7

Arrellano is scooping rights into the body. Arrellano's left arms gets netted up with Vazquez's right, each working their free hand on the body as Vazquez is carried in reverse, Arrellano steering him via their interlocked arms. BIG overhand right by Vazquez, catching Arrellano at mid range. Vazquez throws another but misses, following through and scrubbing Arrellano with some elbow. Messy infighting, each holding on to the other's arm. The female referee has a hard time getting their attention and respect. Flush right by Vazquez jumping right and leaving Arrellano facing the other way.

It seems "Lil' Thund'r" may have bottled lightning in the early going...he looks to be gassing now. Still fighting his guts out, mind you, but sloppy and for once in the seventh he never truly bothered Vazquez for a moment.

 

Round 8

Arrellano is jabbing the body, reaching in, one and done. Vazquez lets a few jabs trickle into Arrellano's forehead from outside, up on tiptoes, circling rapidly. Vazquez is heaving, and negating the action. The crowd is getting restless and may actually be on Arrellano's side. BIG hook by Arrellano putting Vazquez on the ropes, gets a roar. Vazquez jabs his way free, dancing away. Several pinpoint jabs from the hip by Vazquez, changing directions. Clinch. Arrellano is warned for I believe hitting behind the head. Another clinch. Break ordered as Vazquez twists on Arrellano's arms. BIG left hook by Arrellano, blocked on both underarms of Vazquez, pushed out in a shield. Vazquez bops Arrellano above the ear with a light hook and prances to his left. Arrellano grazes with a hook and uppercut as Vazquez skips away from him.

Vazquez was praying - literally gazing up at the skies with his arm raised, conversing directly with God - while the cards were read aloud.

He then celebrated like he just won another world title or something.

Talk about desperate to keep one's career alive. Toward what end, who knows? Based on this performance he gets annihilated by even the weakest belt holders at 126.

In fact I would pick them all to knock him out.

Gradovich (IBF), yep.

Lomachenko (WBO), yep.

Cuellar (interim WBA), yep.

Walters (WBA) or Gonzalez (WBC)? OMG yes. Brutally. :verysad

 

Hell, every top featherweight contender would obliterate Vazquez right now.

Donaire? Mares? Total mismatches.
