Theres the seocnd bout of Cadilla that is complete but it is when he is past it. The only footage of him before his crash is McAllister 2 and 3, and Cam
The third was a good bout, the 4th was rougher and less exciting. Pep's first fight with Chalky Wright was the first fight shown on the Friday Night Fight's series in America so I do think there is a fair chance that some more Pep footage could be out there (well I hope there is)
I believe I am one of the very fewsurviving fans who saw ,the "Will Of The Wisp", Willie Pep ; in his glorious prime,{before his almost fatal plane crash ], in 1947.......In 1943, with my father, I saw Willie Pep, at 126lbs, give a boxing lesson, to top classy lightweight contender, Allie Stolz....Willie one every round from the 135 lb. Stolz, flooring him also....Modern fans, really would be amazed how great Pep was before the plane crash....He was so elusive, and shooting not one jab, 4 or 5 jabs to his opponent, than glide away, from danger.....The Willie Pep, who I saw,at his peak, would have certinly licked Sandy Saddler, who I watched several times....After his accident in 1947, he lost , maybe 30 percent of his speed... Too bad......A little known fact , about Willie Pep...In 1944 he licked a great 135 pound Willie Joyce, from Chicago, who TWICE beat the great lightweight champ, Ike Williams.... I saw Willie Joyce box in MSG, and he would have given Floyd Mayweather a run for his money.....Yes, Willie Pep, one for the ages......
Burt, not quite sure why, but the way you type i think captures and mirrors the way you actually talk and your expressions and hand gestures. I picture you as 80yrs old yet more active than most 40 year olds, with scar tissue on the knuckles and maybe a glass eye. I think you're awesome.
pachilles, you have described me pretty accurately, boxed a little in my youth, but have no scar tissue on my knuckles, and certainly no glass eye, but my father did have one unfortunately, as did our idol , the immortal Harry Geb, after he retired in 1926,when his sightless eye was removed....Never typed before in my life, but I love boxing lore, especially the second Golden Age, in the 1940's...You are prescient pachilles, thanks....Burt
Great Post Burt, I did not get a chance to see Willie live but I have heard he was a much better fighter before the plane crash and I think he over 100 fights at that time. I have never seen a better boxer and I love when Willie goes on the offense. I can tell in his fights (marred with fouling) with Sadler that even at that point in time Wille was the better fighter
You are correct, he was not nearly the same after the plane crash, but that really just points to how great he truly was.
I don't think there is any footage of his first two fights with Saddler but anywho I love Pep and have some of his fights.
