Will a new star be born in Gamboa if he beats/KO Rios impressively?

So has this been definitely confirmed, then? Crazy. All along I was thinking it was just talk. Never did I envisage it actually taking place.

If by superstardom you mean on a widespread, mainstream level, then no. This isn’t a Pac-Oscar where Rios is a household name. I think it’ll be akin to the Martinez-Williams II that you’ve just mentioned. The boxing world will be going crazy over him. And rightfully so. Despite being drained at the weight, Rios is still a monster that’s difficult for any 135/140 pounder to handle. John Murray is a big, aggressive, decent-hitting lightweight, and even he couldn’t put a dent in him. So if Gamboa, coming up two weight divisions, manages to dominate, hurt or stop him, then that’ll be quite an achievement. It’ll easily be one of the best wins of the past couple of years. People here will be arguing over his and Donaire’s position in the current P4P rankings.

Not starmaking as Rios isn't a very big name on his own. This will be compounded by the fact that Top Rank won't really have anyone for him to take on at lightweight; he'll have to boil back down, be stuck waiting for some of the smaller guys to join him, or jump another class (where Top Rank has more fighters but not many names). Honestly I think taking Lopez's 0 would have done more for Gamboa's star power than a win over Rios would, even if the latter would be a better quality win.

A win would probably shoot Gamboa up lots of rankings, but I'm also not as impressed by Rios as others, and I held this opinion even before he started having problems making weight.

He would be big in the latin community and in boxing....however everything depends on HOW he beats Rios...If he was to KO him like Pacquiao did to Hatton or dominate him like Mayweather did to Gatti people all over the world would hear it....

Similar to Mosley beating Oscar...there might be a rematch....(Bare in mind Rios is not THAT big status wise himself)

I agree completely. Gamboa is taking this fight as he knows a win rockets him up the P4P rankings.

I think Arum is now convinced Gamboa will never be that next PPV star, that is why the fight will take place. He will be a stepping stone for Rios, who has the massive Mexican crowd behind him, and that all-out fighting style making him the next PPV baby of Top Rank.

But if Gamboa beats him, which can happen, it should put him in the top 5 ranking, but in terms of PPV viability, I guess, like other Cubans before him, he just does not have that charisma or the personality to make the mainstream crowd to notice and buy his fights.

I like his skills, his talent, and I really like this fight, because for the first time in his career, he won't be favored, but I think this will be too much for him.

I'm inclined to agree with the idea that this fight was primarily made for Rios' benefit, although I have serious doubts about Arum ever really believing that Gamboa would be a PPV star.

    No.

He's already well known by boxing fans, on a similar level to Rios. Rios isn't known by sports/non boxing fans so it's not a 'breakout' fight.

it's kinda hard to become a star by beating someone who isn't. Rios is good, but I wouldn't consider a win over him something that would make you a star, even with the weight jump and all.

This is true, if gamboa eventually mada jump and knocked pac out then that would make him a star.
I agree with most that Arum is hoping to cash inon gamboa by making him lose to Rios to make Brandon a bigger name and a future pac opponent, but I feel Gamboa stops him, rios should really fight at 140 by now, but amybe with specialists he can amke the weight this time without looking like a ghost like he did vs murray.

Gamboa by KO. Nothing more scary than a counterpuncher (with an absolute nightmare left hook) that comes forward. And Rios gets hit way too much for his own good.

Rios is the guy that Margarito will pass the torch too, Tough as nails high Cardio guy with **** defense. Gamboa will look marvelous landing those ***** slap combos he throws, It'll definitely give him momentun to becoming a star. Maybe he'll fight Juanma Lopez at welterweight when they both get big. Who knows..

In short yes , ill add that if he TKO's Rios , a superstar will be born :deal

Look man Brandon Rios is about 10 - 12% body fat , you can clearly see that in his physical appearance , physique is not everything , but a lack of clear muscle defenition and less body fat is an indication of what your diet looks like , and Rios has admitted to having a shitty diet , he's now got a nutritionist on board and IMHO will comfortably make 135 and if the camp goes well he'll provbably stay there , this is bad news for Gamboa , because a physically in shape Rios , is gonna be a really tough task for Gamboa

Its gonna be interesting to see how Gamboa applies himself here , the photographs of him in the kronk gym with Manny tell a story , he looks ****in massive , and impressively put together , lots of muscle , and virtually no fat , maybe he was restricting his power down @126 , and 135 (at this stage) is just more of a natural fit , ala Manny Pacquiao , who knows , but ill say this , Gamboa has got some balls taking this fight , because nobody from 135 - 140 will want to fight Brandon Rios right now :deal , round one will tell us everything we need to know about this fight , if Gamboa's got the pop at the weight he'll find the target , if not Rios will push him back , its gonna be a great fight while it lasts one way or the other

Head says Rios , heart says Gamboa
