I can't imagine how Showtime will be able to make all the huge paydays for Al Haymon's roster of boxers. I think to avoid bankruptcy, Showtime will end up giving the boot to Haymon, just like HBO did.
Doubt it. Haymon just going to end up with a lot of fighters without network dates, who still owe him a huge % of their purse for whatever fights they do get.
Because of paying extraordinary amounts of money to mediocre Haymon boxers like Andre Berto, HBO Sports ran into some financial difficulties for awhile (they were not making any money). So they let Greenberg go, and let Haymon's friend Kery Davis go as well. HBO no longer give in to Haymon's unrealistic money demands for mediocre boxers, but now Showtime appears to be making the same mistakes HBO made.
all depends on the viewing numbers, if they continue to grow and the PPV's make good money then it won't be a problem. if the numbers deteriorate then Espinoza will lose his job and haymon will be left with no tv network.
This is just a dumb thread! Both networks are saving HUGE $$$ by not wasting a penny on Heavyweight boxing.
Do you have access to their financial statements? How do you know all of the record amount of ratings they're getting isn't resulting in a higher profit after paying for all the advertising and purses?
They won't go bankrupted, but it just means they won't be able to put together good matchups. There's a reason why Showtime approved fights like Thurman vs Diaz or Broner vs Molina or Wilder vs The next guy willing to dive or Quillin vs some guy with bad vision or Russell Jr vs TBA. They pay one fighter well and the other fighter peanuts. That's how Showtime save money. HBO would never accept that sh*t. They want good matchups. They reject matchups that are too soft unless there is an end goal. HBO will continue to build stars because they'll match guys tough and let the best emerge from the heap. Showtime on the other hand will throw you a bone every now and then, but more often than not, they're showing complete mismatches.
yeah they're getting GGG some real tough fights and Kovalev is fighting the formidable Agnew this Saturday.
They didn't even pick up the Adama fight. What are you talking about? They did pick up Proska, which many people thought would beat him, Macklin, a top 5 Middleweight at the time and Stevens, a power puncher. And they matched Kovalev tough throughout 2013 with Cleverly & Shillak. He made it look easy and that's how he became a big name. Agnew & Fonfara is supposed to set up a super fight. We know what happened there.
