Out of all the former football players jumping into the ring, Barry Hall hitting the pro ranks imo is the biggest move since Anthony Mundine in 2000.

Do you reckon Barry Hall will be supported or will the public want to see him knocked out?

If you compare him to Mundine, Mundine was actually a clean player on the field, only just liked to talk himself and his team up in the media.

Hall on the other hand, is a thug on the footy field but is more quiet verbally.

I wonder how Hall will be received by the general public and more importantly the die hard boxing fans.

A good point Dominator....another comparison especially because of the weight class would be John Hopoate to Barry Hall.

Hoppa came in as a real villain due to his digital antics. The idea of running around the park throwing a ball to a teammate only to find yourself turning to look at a smiling Hoppa on his knees with his fist half up your arse is definately not very heroic and didn't earn much praise or respect from any bloke apart from Tod McKenny.
But to his credit (and the fact that he is income limited) he has turned your average punter around to being in his corner come fight night. Not everyones cup of tea but he earned a good amount of respect for taking the McCall fight early in his career.

Barry Hall has tended to be a shy flower of sorts away from football cause of the whole anominity of an Aussie Rules players in Sydney. He has also had a fairly illustrious AFL career spanning St Kilda and Sydney and to most is respected for his ability and talent.
I think Barry Hall would be moving into boxing with a fair amount of support from the AFL public (those who really know him). It has been known for years that he has had an amature career as a boxer and was also pretty handy at martial arts. It has also be said that boxing was always the next move so this seems to be a progression as a sportsman and not a flipppent move to make a qiuck buck on the back of Aussie rules fame or infamy, whichever way you view him.
Personally I'm glad he has made the move out of football. Still has massive talent but it felt as though football had run its course and other achievements in life for him are yet to be embarked upon.

Well so far, he's acted like a thug on the field in the middle of the game, picking fights with people who aren't looking for fights, in one case even hitting someone from behind for no reason while the guy's on the ground. That's pretty much what a cowardly thug would do.

I don't know about everyone else but i'm not looking forward to Barry Hall boxing one bit because the usual will inevitably happen. He will be spoon feed bums and tomato cans from Somoa/Fiji etc etc for 2 to 3 years and build up a "fake" boxing record and we will have to hear some cringeworthy comments from blokes who should know better (Johnny Lewis, Angelo Hyder, Danny Green etc etc) saying that Hall will be knocking on the door for a world title/heading to Vegas to take on the big guns etc etc. It will just be a farce.

Barry Hall is a boxer - that decided to play footy, and he done
well as an AFL player, was a dominating presence.

But, Hall knows what it takes to be a boxer, obviously, its not
like your just grabbing an athlete with talent and throwing him
in the ring, Hall knows hard work, but he is actually a fairly
intelligent bloke, his indescresions on the field, baffle everyone.

I think another AFL side will pick him up over the next few months.

Yeah, moving to boxing has seemed the natural step for quite some time.

He'll get some good support from AFL circles, but I think his thuggish nature on the footy field deservedly should paste him in a negative light.

This will be good for him as it will give him greater media attention and then it will be up to Barry to show whether or not he is the real deal.

Given he likes a scrap and has a boxing background, it's almost his duty to enter the ring and show us what he's made of.

We have heard from Green , Hyder , Lewis etc who say he can box but hypothetically how far can he go ?. He is around 32 years of age , very old to be making your pro debut . Personally I think he could take the aussie title and that would be about it . How big is he , would he be a legit size heavyweight ?

He will go nowhere in the world of boxing. He might be able to do similar to Hoppa and Haumono on the laughable Australian heavyweight scene where guys who would be considered no better than journeymen anywhere else in the world are fighting on PPV.

IMO from what I've seen and what I've heard, I believe he has waaayyy more potential than Hoppa, and he managed to win an Australian title and a world title shot.

If Hall can get in a similar position as Hoppa (for a world title), it would be a great accomplishment, even if it is for a minor belt like a IBO title. Winning an Australian Title will be meaningless considering the deplorable state of the domestic boxing scene.

But agree don't think he'll get very far, I'd say he's left it about 3 years too late.

Hoppa is pathetic at boxing. He has no skills at all. Yes he could beat us all up and he scored a win over a journeyman (Mirovic) who was about 42 years old. I would fear for Haumono/Hoppa/Halls safety if they ever fought for a genuine heavyweight world title. Look what an ancient grandpa Oliver McCall did to Hoppa.

You should rephrase your question to "What category will Hall fall under...the good, the bad, or the ugly?"
And like 90% of the guys out there who make anything near a decent coin in the sport, he'd fall under the 'ugly' category.
