Calzaghe and Dawson are both faster, but Kovalev's got good speed. The ability to throw in combination from different angles is what the three share in common that will trouble Hopkins. And c'mon Eddie, Dawson doesn't hit harder than Kovalev. You know that. :good
Just look at this ****: ***********.youtube.com/watch?v=uPwG9Hcfrt0 Boxing joke: why was Sergey Kovalev charged with double homicide? He fought Stevenson and Dawson on the same night.
Kovalev doesn't look faster than Dawson or Pascal to me. Hopkins is interested. Kovalev was mentioned as an opponent when Murat couldn't get the Visa. Besides Naazim won't let Hopkins fight anybody that he doesn't think he can handle. As long as Hopkins brings his gas tank from the Cloud and Pascal fights into the ring, he would beat Kovalev.
I don't really think it's ducking anymore (with Bhops heritage) unless it's made a mandatory. With regards to Kovalevs quality - I'm sold. Realistically his punching has been proven over and again against sufficiently high level opposition. The only doubts to be expressed are the ones in the last few posts. We don't know how he is fighting on the back foot. Under pressure. We don't know his resilience or chin quality or Stamina. We don't know these things because he is a fukin beast early and coming forward. And it works. See that early punch that almost sent White skidding sidewards? Hear it? It's the kind of power that makes fight planning dribble out of opponents ears. Sooner or later someones gonna back him up, tie him up or bang him badly. If he can handle that, he's top at 175 - no question.
I think Hopkins will fight whoever makes him the most money at this point - be that Cleverly, Froch, Stevenson, Bute. Unfortunately for Kovalev, he brings no economic power right now.
He doesn't have to be faster than Dawson or Pascal to still be faster than Hopkins. It's not like Hopkins was just a hair slower than those guys. Kovalev is faster than Hopkins now.
Hopkins has earned the right to pick his last fight or two but he will frame it all wrong. No doubt dismissing Kovalev in one of his long winded, diatride's. Hopkins massive ego and even bigger chip on his shoulder will not permit him to go out on the end of a bad beating from a young lion like Kovalev.
Kovalev has better timing and is accurate from unconventional angles that would negate any speed disadvantage he would encounter. Sergey has faced bigger and faster guys in domestic Russian tournaments. Anyone who thinks (HOPES) he cannot fight off his backfoot, eats right hands or has a shitty chin is mistaken.
Maybe, maybe not. The point is, he isn't fast enough to bother Hopkins with it. What he could do to bother Hopkins is apply non-stop pressure, round after round. Kovalev also better have a chin, because it looked like he was wobbled by White's jab at one point the other night.
If he can get a fight with Stevenson or Cleverly he will get the chance to pick up another one anyway, and I'm sure the IBF would except Kessler or Froch as a suitable opponent so not to strip him.
i rewound that part like 10 times if u look closely, u will see kovalev was adgusting his left foot as white was throwing the jab, and right before it landed, kovalev tried to slip it, which caused his left foot to land awkwardly and made him stumble he wasnt dazed or anything from the jab lol
