I think your being too harsh James. Why are you so offended by an ex-champion getting an immediate shot at the title he lost in a controversial decision? Its true BJ might not have the best resume at LW but the scoring in the first fight with Edgar could have easily gone his way and BJ deserves a chance to rectify the loss and win back his title.

    :good

btw, the only reason why other guys like florian have better resume in LW compared to penn is because penn pushed his limits by facing bigger "top" guys like hughes, gsp, and even the former LHW champ lyoto machida. others might brag about having better resume in LW, but penn's resume as a whole is far more impressive IMO (even w/ those losses).

BJ is his own worst enemy. He can beat anybody his size, he's just Hawaiian, and I forgive him for it, but it means he's a little dumber and more stubborn than is good for him.

    :lol::lol:

Although in all seriousness, I agree he is his own worst enemy in most cases. That and GSP.

I mention those names just cuz of your pathetic hate for this guy is blinding you to what he has accomplished. Yes those wins are from a long time ago but it shows that even back then bj was fighting the top dawg.

Like i said who is he supposed to fight next? florian he already beat who is currently rank# 4 in the LW division. You keep mentioning florian has fought more time than bj but you failed to mention that bj whoop his ass already.

Like i said just wait and the winner of bj-frankie and kenny-maynard fight will fight each other.

Whooped his ass? We must have watched different fights...I saw B.J. win, but it was far from an "ass whopping". Now, Sean Sherk, that was an ass whooping. Don't get them confused. And the top contender is the top contender no matter the history...

Harsh? Hardly. Harsh would be if B.J. had done none of the obscenely stupid things he has done and my still talking as I am. I can completely respect him as a fighter and his ability, but beside that...nope.

And it wasn't really so contoversial, the only thing that was controversial about it was the one judge scoring it 50-45. Frankie clearly, and I do mean clearly, won that fight. And I thought he'd lose, and handily at that!

And why does B.J. deserve a chance to rectify his loss but very few, in any, other champions do not? I didn't see Rich Franklin get an immediate rematch. I didn't see Jackson get an immediate rematch with Forrest. Consistency is lacking severely and special treatment shouldn't be given because of a nickname...

And I guess you're also missing the fact that I explicitly said Lightweight over and over and over again. And what's so impressive about losing? If I were to fight Brock Lesnar tomorrow it'd be a win-win for me? If I lose then hell, I had the balls to fight the Heavyweight Champion! If I win, well, holy ****! No, you can't have it both ways. If I choose to fight Lesnar it's not a sign that I have "balls", it should be evidence of my insanity.

And I'm so tired of that absurdly stupid argument, "He fought Lyoto Machida!" Yeah, back when Machida was a fraction of the fighter he currently is. If I were to fight against someone and do well with them as an amateur or even in my first few professional fights and I lose but they go on to become a UFC Supetstar, does that mean I could hang with them now? No, that's nonsense. Complete and utter nonsense. And so is the point you just tried putting forward. (Not you, just the argument)

Your one of the better posters on this forum James but I think you are letting your bias cloud your judgment. There was no clear winner in that fight. Edgar clearly won round 5 and Penn clearly won rounds 1 and 2 but rounds 3 and 4 were extremely close and difficult to score.

Scope this fightmetric out, watch the fight again and get back to me: http://blog.fightmetric.com/2010/08/edgar-vs-penn-fightmetric-report.html

I don't believe every champion deserves a rematch when they lose the title, but the ones who get dethroned by close, disputed decisions certainly do. I wish they had given Rampage another shot at Forrest and I have no qualms about Penn rematching Frankie, especially when I get to see it live. :deal

I thought Edgar won convincingly when I watched it live. I watched it a couple days ago, and yeah, the decision could have gone either way. Neither fighter really did anything significant in the whole fight.

Well, you lucky son of a bish! You going to the EXPO, too? If so...I hate you. (Not in a hate, wanna kill you kinda way, but a hate you in a jealous, envious kinda way)

And, I'll admit that I haven't watched the fight in a couple months, but I have viewed it fairly close to a dozen times. Maybe 6-8 times. Maybe I'll even watch it again after I type this up, but I've come to the same conclusion every time I've watched it: Frankie won and fairly decisively.

Fight "stats" don't always tell the whole story and you yourself know that, I'm sure. I could hit you with an overhand right and completely wobble you or I can hit your shoulder with a lazy jab and the Metric will still score one hit either way. Now I'm aware they have this "hit" thing where they try and measure how "hard" you hit or have been hit but it's subjective at best.

And you really have no problem with this rematch? Really? Because I'd love to hear your reasoning for thinking this is a well-earned and deserved rematch. To me, he doesn't deserve it at all. He came in and fought what many think is a very lackluster fight and seemingly "didn't show up!" He clearly wasn't in control of the fight to the degree Edgar was and Edgar controlled the pace and tempo of that fight from bell to bell. Why would you possibly grant a rematch to a guy who gave such a poor performance?

I can completely see giving Rua a rematch against Machida. That was a FANTASTIC fight! Everyone and their mother was begging for the rematch! I could see giving Rampage a rematch against Forrest because it was a relatively close fight and they both gave very good performances. I can even see Chael getting a rematch because of his performance (despite him not having been the Champion) given the circumstances. But, you're telling me, in all honesty and with a straight face, that you'd grant a rematch to Penn because of his performance? If yes, that's absolutely ridiculous. If no, and you still believe he should be given the rematch then it must be on grounds of some kind of merit...but I've already shown that he's not the most accomplished Lightweight in terms of a record and hasn't had the longest winning streak in the division. Gray Maynard and Kenny Florian would have been more deserving of a title shot then Penn would have been for an immediate rematch. I'd say Maynard first, Florian second and Penn after a win or two, which should be little problem. Penn is getting this solely on his name and because the UFC has spend an enormous amount of time and money building him up and they probably believe that he'll win the rematch and everything will be "right" with the division again and it's business as usual. And even if he loses again then that clout is passed to Edgar and they got another guy to promote.

My reasoning is not based on my dislike for anyone. I have a solid, rational and logical basis for everything I say.

I actually agreed with this. Look at it this way, the match was a boxing match. And no boxing judge would give that fight to Frankie. But all is forgiven since this is MMA and judges cant tell a punch from a poke.

From a boxing fans perspective, BJ won the standup clearly (which essentially what the fight was except for a minor takedown). He landed the cleaner/harder punches and he rocked Edgar numerous times

Saying that though, I wouldnt be surprised if Edgar pulls it out in the same manner.

Question is is BJs career over with a loss?

Absolutely not. He would still be the favorite in every fight at lightweight. That alone is enough motivation to keep him going.

I'm not sure if hes willing to work his way back up to contention, which is precisely what Dana wil have him do. At this stage, BJ is one big fight per year fighter.

I wonder what Frankie can do this time round or maybe the same style can beat BJ again. BJ should come in better shape and more prepared mentally and strategically.

Frankie should avoid the takedown cuz i believe bj will go for the takedown this time and choke him out. Frankie is faster on his feet than bj. If this end up as a striking match i can see edgar winning again.

Bj needs to take him down and choke him out. I don't think anybody can compete with bj jiujitsu at 155.

The problem with your argument is that its all based on the notion that Penn's performance was poor and therefore he doesn't deserve an immediate title shot. I don't think BJ's performance was poor at all, in fact he was doing very well for most of the fight. Sure Frankie had the fancier footwork and had Penn out-hustled by the end of the contest but BJ connected more and with harder shots all night. In my most recent viewing of the fight I had a hard time giving Frankie two rounds let alone the three necessary for a win. Watch the fight again and post your scorecard if you want to keep arguing, but as of right now I feel your memory is severely underestimating Penn's performance. Your not really living up to your "I have a solid, rational and logical basis for everything I say" mantra when you call Rampage's performance vs Griffin "very good" and BJ's against Edgar "poor".
