Will boxing fans allow Calzaghe to retire without facing Pavlik?

I think in the event Pavlik wins over Hopkins in a dominating fashion, Calzaghe retires the next day.

He is gonna retire anyways. I doubt fans can do something about it.

With his achievements and legacy, he should be allowed to retire with dignity, I fear however this over rated redneck Pavlik will try and further his own career by calling Calzaghe out at every chance and making his name from a legend.
Personally I feel Calzaghe should have retired after Kessler, or at teh very least after Hopkins, though still the best in his weight class, he isn't quite as great as he was when he was that little bit younger, and when age kicks in, theres always a risk when you fight in Joe's style.

I'd prefer he would retire but have the feeling he'll fight Pavlik in Cardiff next year. And I don't think boxing fans will be able to sway him at all. Look at the response to him fighting Roy Jones jr.

That being said, if they were to fight I feel Joe would have the better chance of winning. I believe that if Jermain could take Kelly the distance then Joe most definitely could. Plus, Joe excels when people come to him a la Kelly's style (Not that I'm saying Kelly's pressure is uneducated).

I think if Joe got caught with a good shot from Kelly early on he would adapt and make damn sure it didn't happen again. And if it really is to be Joe's last fight, he might think **** it and go hell for leather in the latter rounds, forsaking his fragile hands, in an attempt to stamp a final emphatic seal on his career. And Kelly's chin is not unpenetrable.

    Time will tell.

Unfortunately, it's not down to us...there's always "one more fight", too.

When do the fans have anything to do with a boxer's decision to reitre? :patsch

Joe should fight Pavlik if he wants to make his legacy even better but no one can blame him if he calls it a day before his 37th birthday - still undefeated. He had his Jermain Taylor in Mikkel Kessler in the historical SMW unification fight, and while Hopkins failed to win vs. the young gun, Calzaghe put up his best performance to win in great fashion in a memorable fight. Yes, he could still fight Kelly Pavlik. Then Chad Dawson. Maybe Lucian Bute. How about Arthur Abraham? Or The Next Superstar after that? There's always another, but after Kessler IMO Pavlik is just another young gun and Kessler is the best of the young guns.

If Calzaghe were 32, I'd be mad if he said no thanks, I'd rather not fight Kelly. At 36, who can blame him? Been there, done that. Let the young guns fight each other and try to achieve what he did. Or surpass. Let the old man go.

Calzaghe can never be accused of dodging big names so if he gets past roy then retires so be it one up and coming fighter is not going to tarnish he's legacy by not taking the fight unless they fight and pavlik wins ofc i think if both prevail in there next fights then it might be to hard to resist for calzaghe

I like Pavlik but he should concern himself with Arthur Abraham and Mikkel Kessler nevermind chasing a man who has already announced his retierment and who is obviusly not the fighter he once was

People accuse Calzaghe of only fighting guys past their best but that exactly what Pavlik is doing calling Joe out !

Pavlik has to beat B h op first which IMO may be harder than a few people think. Also once RJJ has beat Joe C he will retire any way.

i think if pavlik dominates hopkins calzaghe should retire it would be stupid to fight him.but lets get real.pavlik aint going to get anywhere near hopkins.i seriously think pavlik will see his first loss to hopkins due to a poor styles clash.pavlik should have avoided this fight and waited for the calz rjj outcome.then challenged calz which would of been a great fight.but as soon as he loses to hopkins no one is going to care.

Joe is still P4P #3, that has to account for something. Abraham and Kessler aren't even in the P4P top 20.:smoke
