Haymon's network deals with PBC will obviously change exposure; now that Mayweather is gone, and new stars can emerge, will boxing have a chance to become mainstream again?
It might get bigger but I don't think it will go mainstream. Other sports have excitement at the top level every weekend. There are enough belts and divisions that there could be a world title bout every weekend but there ain't.
It will take more than that to make it mainstream again. There is a lot more competition from other sports than before. Also simply showing a product to the masses doesn't mean everyone will want it, you need a good product and quite frankly PBC isn't providing the best fighters in competitive matches. What ails boxing goes far beyond simply returning it to terrestrial TV. Would take a lot more to make it mainstream again. Though I think it's possible the success of fighters like Mayweather and Pac still show there is an audience there for boxing on a larger scale but to tap into that on a more regular basis will require change from the top to the bottom of the sport.
Agreed. The best(and theoretically) most interesting fighters price themselves away from new fans. Also, the lack of structure is crippling. Fights here, fights there. This belt, that belt. This organization, that organization. For a new fan, or potential fan, there is nothing to follow with any substance or with a degree of faith.
PPV is dying, the model won't last long. Besides, boxing was mainstream even in the PPV era. In the older days, mega-fights were closed circuit; you had to watch in a cinema, that's far more of a hassle than watching boxing on TV. The Ali-Liston fights were shown through closed circuit, Ali-Frazier III was shown on PPV.
