Or even the ref? I think Joe will win 8 rounds to 4, but I'm not too sure if the judges won't bend a couple of those rounds and somehow eke out a Hopkins 'split'. Anyone else nervous about this?
Calzaghe's got Warren on his side and I think Frank made it pretty damn clear that they sign the fight only and I mean ONLY if they'll have their word on the judges just like GBP. I'm pretty sure about that. Warren would've never ever let his only P4P fighter to fight in hostile territory. He's not stupid. On the other hand, the fight is held in Las De La Hoyas and we've already seen how much influence Oscar have on the Nevada State Athletic Comission (him vs. Sturm, D-Hop, Casamayor etc.) Still, Taylor beat Hopkins twice in Vegas (according to the judges) so Calzaghe shouldn't worry about controversial scoring. And if he's not worrying, who should anyone else worry?
Yeah, this is not hostile territory. Most people in America do not feel some sort of special connection to Bernard Hopkins. The fans will mostly be rooting for Calzaghe. The boxing world does not care about Hopkins either because he doesn't sell fights, if anything they'll bend rounds towards Calzaghe because he is the star and if he does well the could try to market him more in the US - good looking white guy, amazingly skilled boxer etc etc. And the judge is Puerto Rican so if anything he'll be ****ing Hopkins over...
If the judges call it clean, a slapped punch don't count, in it is illegal.:happy Of course so is lots of what Hopkins does. But if Cal loses and it is close and goes the distance, slapped punches is a reason. A good ref will linform him of that and deduct points........:yep A slappped punch is illegal becasue it breaks ear drums. It is just as illegal as a rabbit punch, or a kidney punch. So keep that in mind, should Cal lose...it is all his fault, that he slapps punches.....
The chosen judges are experienced and have never given seriously controversial scores in the past. Chuck Giampa is one of the best, always fair and accurate. I notice some of Adelaide Byrd's and the third judge's scores have sometimes been a bit wider or closer than they should have been, but nothing outlandish. If it's a close fight, then the feelings of two of the three judges could be a factor, but all three are too professional to rob Calzaghe if he wins convincingly.
Now that the weigh-in and the mind games are behind our backs, it's the judges, the ref, the altitude of Nevada to affect Joe... Nothing to do with his opponent. This is the perfect sign of what may well come after the fight.
I could actually see the judges favoring Calzaghe's high workrate (even if its not effective) over Hopkins cleaner shots, like we have seen so much recently.
