Will Calzaghe get any credit if he beats or even stops Hopkins?

The haters will never give any Euro any credit, no matter how many fights he wins.

Not initialy, but just as say Lewis has now gained recognition for beating Tyson (a shot boxer and Tyson only by name, but now nobody now states this), Calzaghe will be credited with beating Hopkins. With time, the fact he was 43 will become less apparent.

The win may even make him an ATG with time IMO. :?

This goes to the type of fighter Joe is. Regardless of what the Calzaghe fanatics say (Im a fan, but some of these guys are insane)...this is a VERY TOUGH fight for him. Stylistically, its a nightmare. Joe is a smart man, he knows this...yet he took the fight anyway.

Both fighters deserve credit for this one.

Of course he will, it doesnt matter how old Hopkins is, he is the recognized LHW Champion. It isnt like he is some bum still fighting on his last leg, he just beat Tarver & Winky. :patsch

Max Kellerman will most likely come up with a bull**** story about Bernie having a brain destroying illness that stops him performing to his maximum ability.

I would, I would rank him second on the p4p list should he win this fight. even if Pac wins his fight.

I think Calzaghe is finally getting credit after all these years. I think he started getting credit after the Lacy win.

He should be given credit but from the start due to the situation, he can't be given 100% credit (NOT Calzaghe's fault)

Any boxer who fights on his prime and fights somebody who is already 43 yrs old will not get 100% credit. It so happen that it's Calzaghe that we are talking about.

If it happens to PBF, Hatton, Cotto, Pac etc.. whoever they fight and even if they win by a devastating KO. they can't get 100% Credit for KO a 43 year old boxer!

The thing is, JC isn't looking for a huge amount of credit anyway! He knows boxing better than anyone else on this board, he is aware that Hops is old, and all he wants is the name on his resume because it looks good. He's openly said this a number of times.

In summary, Joe doesn't give a flying f if you give him credit or not. He's doing it for himself.

Fights in America for the first time

Fights a p4p ranked fighter who happens to also be above Calzaghe in the rankings

Moving up in weight to fight the reigning champion

    Fighting an ATG

4 arguments that are brought up to discredit Calzaghe are gonna be null and void after April 18th

    Yes he gets credit.

Legacy-wise it will forever be prefaced by the words: "Defeated 43 year old opponent...."

There's no escaping father time even when he's on your side.

For me it's a no win situation for Joe (except for the money). History doesn't remember P4P lists, it remembers fights. Bernard Hopkins is 43 and had his impressive middleweight reign ended by the rather modest talent of Jermaine Taylor. The rational thinkers should really have considered that the end of Hopkins' time at the top, but due to the nature of modern boxing, he has now become - to many - the recognised LHW champion, in my opinion by doing very little at the weight. I know I'll get people throwing 'names' at me and P4P, HOF and ATG will almost certainly be included in any argument, but this celebrity boxing isn't good for the sport.

It does differ slightly from the Tyson Vs. Lewis fight, in as much as Tyson was a house hold name and the fight - while one-sided to many boxing fans - was a massive sporting event, that a whole host of casual fans thought was a foregone conclusion in favour of Tyson.

Nobody would claim that Larry Holmes most significant win was over the ATG that was Ali, as nobody would claim that Tyson's greatest scalp was that of Holmes.

 how could he not get credit for moving up in weight and beating the light heavyweight champion.

Obviously Hopkins isn't in his prime anymore, but he's still a damn good fighter.

He's as cagey, hard, and dangerous as ever.

The knock is that he is 43 and his workrate is pretty low, we all know that coming into the fight.

So a win over Hops won't look as good for JC as it will vice versa.

But a win over Hopkins would be right behind his Kessler win and will look good even 100 years from now.
