After Bivol undressed him and put a beating on him (12-0, 11-1) do you see Clenelo actually following through with a rematch? I personally don't see it happening, but will give Clenelo credit if he chases a second beating.
Clen finally came to his senses. No forum of Canelo can beat the superior boxer, Bivol. He can take PED’s until his head is the size of a beach ball and it won’t help. He’s slower, less skilled, smaller (naturally at least), can’t move, and generally has no answer for what Bivol brings to the ring. Even Canelo’s corrupt judges couldn’t save him. If he fights Bivol again, it’s going to be a worse beating probably a KO. Bivol has more than he showed in that fight which is scary because he nearly pitched a shutout without breaking a sweat. He let Canelo off the hook several times and was never hurt by Canelo the whole fight. Canelo might talk tough but he wants no part of this rematch. A KO by bivop will detail Canelo’s dinero train quickly and they don’t want that to happen. Let him fight 40 year old guys who are on the downward slope or smaller guys moving up. I see a Charlo fight next after GGG. One thing is certain, it won’t be Bivol.
Great point. I do think Bivol could have gotten Clenelo out of there, but I wonder if finding himself in absolute control made him decide to carry Clenelo to take advantage of another huge payday. A stoppage most certainly would have ensured that Clenelo pass on the rematch.
What's the time limit on the clause? Makes a difference. If he has a year, then he could get back to Bivol for next year's Cinco de Mayo.
Clenelo's rematch clause includes at least 1 interim fight (Golovkin fight, obviously) and possibly (probably) another. So I'd say 2 fights or 2 years from the original fight to get it done as Bivol will want to stay busy/make money in between.
That would have been extremely risky considering Canelo's history with Vegas judges: if Bivol got robbed he definitely wouldn't have got a rematch, he would have lost his world title and his career/legacy would have been badly stunted. Beating Canelo had to be the No.1 objective as it makes Bivol somewhat of a star going forward, able to command higher purses and % splits even in non-Canelo bouts and he's now one of the most highly rated fighters in the sport. Bivol is cautious by nature, so brinkmanship with Canelo's judges isn't his style and neither is letting his hands go looking for a finish unless he's absolutely certain he can get it.
Canelo better have a dynamite gameplan if he does, because Bivol outclassed him in their fight. Bivol would be problematic for Canelo even if the were the same size but DB is clearly the more natural 175 fighter which compounds the problem. Kudos to Canelo for taking the fight without the usual weight clauses etc, but I think 175 is a step too far and Bivol in particular is a singularly tough challenge for Canelo.
Ok but does Canelo have a time frame in which he has to officially notify Bivol that he'd take the rematch? In other words, assuming your time frame is correct, it may all be made null and void if Canelo doesn't respond within a specific time frame. And it can't be a twitter statement, but a legal one.
I think Clenelo is expected to notify Bivol's team after the Golovkin fight. Win or lose, Bivol will know that he's either next or one fight away.
Yeah, I think he will if he beats GGG. He only lost 115-113. Very close fight. Some would say it wasn't, but according to the judges it was hard to pick a winner. And I think next time they'll find it easier. This has 'trap' written all over it.
