Will Cotto be a better fighter coming back, or will the confidence he's built the last few years that has visibly improved him as a talent be gone when he decides to make his return?

Will Cotto be the same fighter, even better, or worse?

He'd never beat Margarito in a rematch. Cotto can look good against anyone else and still win a belt but won't ever be the same. He got beat down by a older guy just like in Trinidad/Vargas. This is why Floyd doesn't fight Margarito at this point in time because win or lose this guy would take years off his career.

Cotto may tighten up the defense but will never be better. In a Margarito rematch he won't be able to absorb the punishment to win. Same would go for a Paul Williams fight. Cotto's best bet was probably to take the fight to Margarito instead of trying to box and last the distance. He got exhausted and was just running from his life. He got a grown man beatdown and won't ever have what it takes to win a rematch.

Who knows? We've never seen Cotto in this position. His training camp & his mentality is what determines how he comes back from the loss. But real champions know how to come back from defeat.

Cotto won't be the same fighter, and I don't see him getting any better than he already was. Knockout beatings like that linger in the back of fighters' minds and usually have a significant effect on their later performances.

I think Williams could make him look even worst, boxing him from the outside all fight long !!

Cotto's a really good fighter but I think Margarito has his number now psychologically; Williams would beat him from the outside and with just a little more experience, Berto will outspeed him also all night long ! Therefore the welterweight division in my opinion, will be quite tough for Miguel Cotto from now on, if he still wants to test himself with the best out there...

I think he'll be the same. In watching the fight, I was amazed at the number of clean shots that Cotto landed that didn't seem to affect Margarito. I have no doubt we were watching the number 1 and 2 welters in the world. Sometimes a fighter is just a bad style matchup or just has your number. Margo has Cotto's number. Cotto probably still has everyone else's number. Cotto is still a badass.

Look at Lewis-Rahman. Lennox Lewis came back full circle.

It's really just a guessing game as of now but a beating like that is never a good thing.

And like I said, every fighter is different when it comes to coming back froma a loss. Who says Cotto has what it takes to do like Lewis did

Cotto will be vicious on the guys that he has outgunned, but he'll probably show signs of his experience with Margarito whenever he goes back in with someone as physically imposing as himself. Overall, I would have to say Cotto will be somewhat worse for this experience. He was flying extremely high on confidence after beating Mosley, now that he's been brutally crushed I don't think he'll ever have that same level in "the power of his mind" the way Cotto himself has referred to it. Cotto is a confidence player. Now he'll be a confidence player who needs to have things go his way to be confident. It works that way much more than most of the time.

Why would fighting Margarito take years off Floyd's career. And if Floyd is on the verge of permanent retirement for any of his next fights (if he does fight again), why is this even an issue? If he has to come out of retirement to fight him, then this cannot be a factor in Floyd not fighting him.

Floyd knows better than to fight the steamy hott Margarito. He supposedly refused a few years ago and would do so tomorrow and the next day. Too much risk at this point in time and win or lose he'll leave something in that ring. It makes more sense to fight the guy after a long layoff rather than in the midst of potential big money fights.. Not to mention fighting Margarito would probably have been his first PPV (2005). The only reason why you say it doesn't factor is because the guy is retired. You couldn't say the same if he weren't could you?

Floyd fights Margarito if he keeps winning and starts to decline.
