It's been 5 years since Miguel Angel Cotto won his last non-asterisked fight (against Clottey). Since then, he has managed to get dominated by Pacquiao, Mayweather, and Trout. The only fights he has won are as follows:

Martinez: Knees injured + old + shot.
    Rodriguez: ESPN fighter.
    Margarito: Eye injured + shot.
Mayorga: Old + shot (and gave Cotto a rough night).
Foreman: Knee injured so bad he couldn't even stand on it.

Lately there's been a lot of talk that Cotto is "back," and this is usually supported by him looking like a wrecking machine against an ESPN fighter and a crippled old man and Freddie Roach having an undeserved reputation a a great trainer.

I'm not buying it. Cotto gets beaten by all of these guys:

    GGG
    Alvarez
    Lara
    Trout
    D. Andrade
    Porter
    Thurman
    Bradley

Cotto is done at the top level and has been for 5 years.

You are possibly right on the fact that he beat an Old, crippled sergio martinez, and I agree that cotto might get beat by guys like GGG, lara , and canelo. But who knows, I think cotto will probably give canelo one hell of a fight. But you cant just ignore the fact that cotto was once an elite fighter and has beat credible opponents in the past. I want to see cotto vs canelo

So Pacquiao and Floyd should get no credit for beating him? Interesting opinion.

To answer the question in the thread title - It depends on who you consider good and how big they have to be.

I would give Cotto a decent chance against Canelo, most of the guy at 147 if they stepped up, most of the guys at 140 if they stepped up and some of the ranked guys at 160.

I remember his pro debut in Texas. I was working the corner for an unknown journeyman heavyweight, Dennis Matthews. I recall writing Cotto's name down after i watched him dismantle his opponent...IIRC they both were making their pro debuts, but Cotto in person seemed so fluid and energetic.

Ive seen Cotto live 7 times, and win or lose He always gives the crowd a great show.

I think Floyd in particular should get less credit than he does, seeing as Pacquiao had already severely beaten Cotto and considering how well Cotto did against Floyd at times.

Pacquiao gets a little more credit because he beat Cotto coming off Cotto's last good win. Cotto may or may not have been damaged goods after being obliterated by Margarito, but he was certainly damaged after the beating Pacquiao gave him. He hasn't beaten a good fighter since.

I don't know about Cotto being "back" because he had 1 tuneup fight and the next was a guy coming off of surgery. We won't know until he fights Canelo, Lara, or Golovkin. Pacquiao is too small for him now, Mayweather would probably be a good match but with 3 fights left, I want new opponents.

I want Cotto vs Canelo too, with Freddie Roach, I think he gives Canelo a good fight. I'm still picking Canelo to win it but now I see it more competitive. They could fight at 155 since that's Canelo's new weight class and Cotto weighed that on 6/6.

Cotto will fight Paul Williams next, but he will insist that Williams take the wheels off him wheel chair. No way will Cotto fight Golovkin, no way at all.............
