I wouldn't knock his resume at 154 so much; to go from a lopsided Pacquiao loss at 147 to fighting a tall, rangy, undefeated and mobile champion like Foreman was no easy task; in fact, he was favored to lose, if I remember correctly. Mayorga wasn't at his best for sure, but you can tell he got up for the fight knowing Pacquiao could be waiting in the wings and had a good size, strength and power advantage over Cotto with an awkward and risky style to top it off. After fighting Margarito (at a weight that favored him), I believe that Cotto can indeed step up his competition at this point and do well. The problem is finding good competition that suits his financial needs; he knows he's at the end of his career, and wants to put in the work for something worth it. Canelo could be a good buy, depending on promotion in the US and Mexican-American purchase; Martinez, possibly, but the PPV would be hard to sell; Kirkland and Angulo are not at that level commercially at all yet, and Chavez Jr. could be sellable, but again depends on a limited Mexican-American market for the most part; Lara, as good as he is, also lacks a market. How does a promoter make money in Mexico if he can't depend on a US PPV market? Is it possible? Would the Mexican TV Networks and live gate sales be able to compensate for the losses of limited PPV sales in the US? If so, would Cotto-Canelo/Chavez Jr. be enticing enough to pull that off? I'd appreciate input by any Mexicans who know what the deal is.
I'd like to see Cotto look just as good against someone else before facing Pacquiao again, but with his improved lateral movement, balance, and right hand, why not? I want Floyd-Pac above all else, but after that or in between rematches would be a great way to end a career, win or lose. I have no doubt he'd do better this time around.
Me too but he is already out of prime.. don't know how many more fights he has under his belt. 1 fight max then go for Pac and NOT fall into the 145lb trap again. May seem like 2 little pounds but as we saw with Brandon Rios, it's not always easy. Lucky for Brandon, he was not fighting a Manny Pacquaio.
I'm not a fan of Miguel cotto and I would like to see him get his ass whooped. So I'll say james kirkland or sergio martinez.Let him get in there with someone who will give him a real challenge and beat that ass.
I want to see him fight Delvin Rodriguez, cause he aint fighting Canelo, Kirkland, Lara or Molina pretty much for sure. I actually think this would be a very competitive fight.
He's not good enough to challenge him and can't sell one tenth of what Cotto does in PPV sales. Cotto's going to look for the right mix of commercial success and legitimate challenge.
