Martinez is gimped to the max. I believe he still has the ability to stop Cotto but I'm not sure he will.

When talking about pure h2h ability at 159 pounds, I dont think Cotto is anywhere close to the toughest fight Martinez has taken. Unless Sergio's kneecap pops off and rolls around the ring, Sergio should dispatch Cotto with relative ease.

I think the layoff was long enough to recover, and Sergio stops Cotto well inside the distance.

We don't know the physical state of Sergio at this point either. He has had a lot of injuries lately. I guess we're going to find out.

Gotta love the different perspectives on the fight game as whole when discussing this fight. For me H2H, P4P, the guys like Barker, Pavlik, Chavez Jr., Murray, Williams are a level below Cotto skill wise. Even Martinez who clearly has all the physical advantages he could want here can't operate on a technical level the way Cotto does though many are taken for a ride with all the smoke and mirrors connected to his speed, ring generalship and overall athleticisim. To each his own I guess....:think

I don't think that Cotto is going in there on a seek and destroy mission like he did with Trout. I think his goal is to out point Sergio and he can do that. Why would he go in there thinking that he can do head up manslaughter with Sergio. That don't make sense. Roach knows that and he is preparing Cotto to fight a disciplined, cerebral fight. If he resists the urge to slug and boxes Sergio, then I give him an excellent chance of winning the fight.

Yeah I dont see how people get that, TBH. I see it as Cotto having star power and having fought against stars. From my perspective, people watched Cotto fight on TV so often and TV announcers said Cotto and some of his opposition was so incredibly great for so long some people started to believe it. I watch the actual fights and wonder how people really come to that conclusion.

Or tl;dr I consider p4p lists little more than popularity contests with a grain of truth.

Cotto is a good fighter, but I think Martinez is way under rated by a lot of US fans. I mean, honestly, would anyone have picked Cotto to beat Pavlik?

No, Pavlik would most likely KO Cotto, however, styles make fights and while Martinez was "big enough" to handle Pav Cotto in comparision is just "big enough" to handle Martinez....its all relative. Gonna be an awesome scrap no doubt...

what injuries is sm suffering ? he had the mcl fixed in his knee which means the ligament has been fixed. as long as he rehabbed the knee that's the least of his worries.

the people that think blowing out your knee is somehow going to impact said athlete for years is delusional. once fixed and rehabbed it should be as good as it can be. same with shoulder injuries, the problem injuries is when you have back disc issues not knee and shoulder problems that are easily corrected

True, I am definately looking forward to the bout. You are right that styles make fights, that was just one example. I think pretty much anyone on Martinez 160 resume beats Cotto at 160.

Well the fight has been signed sealed and will be delivered in a couple short weeks... we should have a much better insight into the objective reality of the situation on June 8th :!::bbb

This isn't Cottos first rodeo and I think he'll box Sergio and win early rounds, at least by being mobile, even a flash knockdown or 2 of Sergio. Jab will be huge factor for Cotto, but once he feels Sergios power, he'll start to backpedal . Sergio still fights like a young man, which he's not. Might not be the mismatch most think. Depends who really wants it more. This might be a different Cotto it is for history and Maravilla knows this opens the door to future fights as he gets more and more exposure. Floyd might see an opportunity to challenge Sergio, depending how Cotto does. Or just face Sturm or Quillin.

Martinez outboxed Pavlik and Chavez at a distance because he was wary of their punching power, he didn't respect Paul Williams power at all that why they had such wars with each other.

I think fearing for his knee longterm, Sergio won't fear Cotto's power at all, he'll attack just like the 2nd Williams fight and KO him early and brutally.
