No, because he has an abysmal Glass Jaw that was exposed as he was starched cold in the amateurs and hurt by feather fisted fatty no-hopers in a few of those Alabama flea market fights he's been padding his record in.

At the very least I think he picks up a title. His potential is greater than anybody in the division, so if he's brought along right, he will be the dominant champion in due time.

    FWIW, he's 27.

And Long wasn't exactly a bum. I think "The Wild Man" proved something last night.

Of course he needs to step up, and of course he needs to improve in some areas, but in interviews he seems like an EXTREMELY dedicated athlete. He's constantly working on his defects (esp his jab)

Remember, this guy had very limited amateur experience, it would have been foolish to fight better opposition too quickly.

I think if he gets the right trainer, and his management doesn't bury him, he can easily be the next champ. Who knows? - but at least he'll be a lot of fun to watch as he climbs the ladder.

the big question: Is he ready to fight a serious contender right now, and if so, who should it be?

Folks said this about Wlad, too. It hasn't seems to be a problem, now has it?

THE HW champion? 0 chance. A title holder, maybe, with the amount of joke titles there are these days, like Povetkin's, anything is possible.

Wilder says he will step up his level of opposition in his next fight, which will be in early 2012.

He'll probably be fighting some decent journeymen like Kendrick Releford and Danny Batchelder now.

There's going to be a void at heavyweight once the Klitschkos retire, and Deontay possibly may be the one to fill it.

I could see him winning an ABC belt, but I doubt as though he will ever be THE heavyweight champion of the world.

Exactly. This guy is a fraud with a record padded with the stiffest of stiffs - all to protect that Grade AAAA china chin.

If his career is extremely carefully guided, he might be a top 10 contender someday, but I suspect he'll get KOed before he gets there.

Just in terms of the poll, I do want to point out that Grant was considered to be a top 5 contender at one point though. A better example would have been Dominic Guinn.

I do agree he needs to take it slow, but I think he has enough fatal flaws that he'll never get there even if he does.
