OK, full disclosure, I've only seen the Garay and Ulrich fights in their entirety and clips of a few more fights, and Erdei is not an incompetent boxer, but if he keeps up the parade of defenses against nobodies in his backyard will he even be remembered as fondly as Sven Ottke, or is that too much to hope for? Edit--The second Garay fight
That's about what I think too. Wish he would step it up and fight someone of note at least. Just goes to show the WBO is a piece of **** 'title'.
the blokes got decent fundamentals. i've heard mixed things about his ambitions, a number of the continental based euro posters have noted that he is happy enough making his money taking easy fights and isn't into the sport that much and doesn't care for building a legacy. on the other hand he has made noises in the press about being frustrated by his promoters failure to secure him big fights. another point that makes me question his dedication is his physique, i look at him and think he could easily make 168 if he put in some hard yards. when all is said and done i personally think he is just in the sport for the money and has no intention of ever pushing himself. shame because he's a talented enough boxer to mix it with at least the likes of tarver, woods, johnson etc. guys like calzaghe, hopkins and dawson would most likely beat him fairly comfortably.
I'm not thrilled about Erdei holding the belt hostage but I'm not exactly up in arms over it. There are other good fights to be made in the division and plenty of good fighters. Frankly, if a guy cares more about making money than building a legacy then more power to him. A legacy ain't gonna pay your bills. Just ask any broke ATG.
Ottke will be remembered - Erdei not...and trust me: In about 2-5 years, Ottke WILL be inducted in the IBHOF! :deal
Erdei from what i have seen is a capable Boxer who is a bit wild at times. For whatever reason he is content with kidnapping the WBO and not fighting anybody of note....for several years now. He is barely a somebody now so he will be quickly forgotten.
Here is the deal: Ottke fought and beat the better comp. Ottke also got more gift and questionable decisions. Erdei was the better boxer by a little (IMO), and carried a bit more power than Ottke (fact)...neither will be fondly remembered, if Erdei keeps doing what he's been doing.
How does one even quantify someone like Erdei? The guy hasn't fought a single marquee fighter. Like him or not, Ottke at least had some serious names on his resume.
Erdei will be remembered in Germany, that's it, but if he retires undefeated the stats will eventually come up.
