with golden boy moving all their fighters to showtime and most people believing that Top Rank will fade when Arum dies, is it safe to say that down the line Oscar will take control of HBO again and basically control everything boxing in which all the elite boxers are under the golden boy banner?
How? Most (not all) of their fighters have already been exposed as Hype Jobs. Who really wants to see Seth Mitchell or Victor Ortiz crammed down our throats? HBO will have more competitive fights now that GBP is gone.
I don't think Oscar will ever control boxing. He does the same thing Arum does-bad undercard fights and a good main event, which disappoints at times. Oscar is a good businessman, but he is not doing that great in the whole promotion of Golden Boy. Don King was the best there was at promoting, He had so many fighters on his promotion that he always had good fights on the main event and undercard fights. And that is why promoters control boxing when they provide great cards.
people seem to be forgetting that Golden Boy has the most influence in boxing right now with a manager (Al Haymon) that boxers will want to fight for. It doesnt necessarily matter if the fighters are ****, it is their powerful influence that can possibly take over boxing. I mean seriously they own Ring Magazine and now a premium network.
Don King fight cards where the business. Back in the day when it was an honour to fight on a Tyson or someone elses undercard (obviously everyone wanted to headline their own, but thats not my point)
Like it or not HBO is a big name in boxing without network fights, and it hurts Oscar more than it hurts HBO when it comes to no more Goldenboy on HBO.
I think they will be the name for a long time, Golden Boy had so many guys who were suppose to be the man fall through but in Broner and Canelo I believe they have the two guys who will dominate and sale. Pacquiao is almost done and Donaire is 30 with no pay per view headline, staying with both companies would have pretty much sealed it but Oscar and Schaefer are so rich who can compete when Arum is gone. I know Floyd fans say he will but he couldn't even hold onto Vargas when he had the ability to put him on his huge shows
Saying most is over doing it you have Khan and Berto also but they have a ton of legit guys, to the point they could have one guy dominate every weight
Top Rank won't fade when Bob dies. Arum's been grooming Todd DuBoef as his successor for years. And Oscar doesn't actually do much at GBP, he's just the figurehead. It's Schafer who runs the company and makes all the deals. Oscar's name and starpower got them TV dates in the early years and allowed them to establish themselves as major promoters.
They have Canelo and Broner as young fighters. That is it. Most of the others have been KOed or schooled or both. Mayweather isn't really a GBP fighter he just gives them 5% to co-promote and take all the liability for his fights which is very smart btw.... Ortiz, Mitchell, Khan, Kirkland, etc have been brutally and embarrassingly KOed. They were all hype. I do believe Broner is Legit not sold on Canelo though.... Time will tell.
Mares, Gary Russell, Thurman, Matthysse, Garcia, Peterson, Lopez, Maidana, Ponce even a guy like Alexander I'm not saying special, but they are a better than what Top Rank has
I doubt it will ever happen, to many competent players that are relatively flush with cash. The world of MMA prior to the current UFC management taking hold was pretty barren with a lot of small organizations(king of the cage, rumble on the rock, etc.) in the US and the only big boy in the room was Pride FC which had a long list of problems which led to Zuffa(UFC parent company) buying it. So for what the UFC did, they needed a lot less money and they had all the world's best pounding on their door to be let in because while $100K is a lot less than what Broner makes, it was a lot more then what they would make on Bodog Fight. GBP even if they were extremely well capitalized have no such market, they are dealing with a mature market with many players both domestically and internationally who know what they are doing. Short of some sort of mega merger between GBP and Top Rank happening, I don't see it.
