If he continues to fight the best available competition in his weight class and hurt people in ways they've never been hurt before while looking indestructible, I have no problem considering him a Great, even if the names on his resume are underwhelming historically.
Good post...Just watching some of his bouts, I see a remarkable destructive THINKING puncher who places each punch where he wants to...His punches are so darn accurate and lethal that if his opponent quickly covers up, GGG can "arc" his blows in mid flight and circumvent his opponents defense. I have been watching boxing for many moons and GGG seems to me to fit in with any MW I have ever seen...A thinking man's destructive puncher... Hagler was terrific, but I cannot see a Vito Antuofermo lasting 15 rounds with Mr. "Drahma", GGG...Of course time will tell...
This worked wonders for Bob Foster, another hard hitting great who made up for not having great contemporaries at his weight by utterly destroying most of them. Cotto would be for GGG what **** Tiger was for Foster. A great name, but simply outgunned at that weight.
Nowhere near a great one. . Yet. He could achieve something but seems to have no ambition to do what is required for him to stand along former greats. Roy Junior MW record alone is better than GGG's now. Even with everything else Roy achieved , his greatness is still questioned. GGG has not achieved a quarter of what Roy did over all and i doubt he ever will.
H2h a dangerous fighter, but his best win is Murray. Let that sink in. I rate Kovalev much higher, but for some reason he doesn't seem to get the same respect.
Agree completely. At his age and with his potential match ups, it will difficult to be considered an ATG. If he beat Ward, it would be a different story. But that's unlikely. He seems too small to ever challenge Kovalev, also.
It's hopeless for Golovkin. If he beats Ward, Ward was washed up from being inactive. If he beats [whatever top welterweight or junior middleweight rises to 160], they were too small. If he beats [whatever other middleweight holds a belt] they were too sorry.
Ward definitely isn't washed up. That would be a great win, except he'd lose to Ward. If Andrade would get his act together, he would be the toughest fight for GGG at 160. I hate to say that I doubt it will ever come off.
If he stays at middleweight and just keeps beating the best available opponents on his current schedule, and keeps that up another 2 or 3 years, he's entitled to be ranked alongside the greats. I know a lot of modern fans expect fighters to jump up weights and collect belts and all that, and really value those things, but I think that's become overrated, especially with all the negotiating and wrangling catch-weights etc.
So he doesn't need to jump up but will be great for waiting around on lower weight guys to move up to him? Ok
I tend to agree with you but I'd bet that neither of those wins (if the fights were to go off and Golovkin prevailed) would receive their due respect amongst many boxing fans over 40. You'd mostly hear/read the exact disclosures that I typed above.
