GGG is on 19 consecutive title defenses. Hopinks holds the record for 20. Hopkins run was from 1995-2005, a period when Roy Jones moved up from 160. You'd have to assume if Roy Jones was still at 160 pounds, he would win the decision over Hopkins. In addition during the timeline puncher's like McClellan and Jullian Jackson had faded from the scene. There is no one around from GGG's reign from 2012 to current that would be favored to beat him. At age 35 GGG has clearly slowed down some. Does he have enough left to break Hopkins record? I think so. Debate or vote in the poll.
I think he is slightly past his best now. Canelo or Jacobs might stop his gallop next time out. If he fights Saunders, then he can tie it ,even a regressing Golovkin can still overwhelm Saunders.
It is my opinion that modern fighters do not get the respect they deserve as many people born pre 1970 will always blast their competition, and have reservations about anyone new replacing their classic favorites on lists. So this group often waits until a fighter has retired before giving fighters their due. I saw it with Holmes and Lewis. And even now with Wlad. I also saw it with Hopkins. Having said that, breaking a record like this is a significant accomplishment regardless of era, and commands respect. Golovkin will beat Saunders if they meet in the next six months. He can also pick an easier opponents or get stuck with a less than ideal mandatory to get to 20 title defenses at middle weight.
Isn't there some argument to whether Golovkin's earlier defences should count towards the record? Something about the validity of the titles he held? If we are counting all 19 as defences then it is likely he will beat Hopkins record. I don't see Canelo, Saunders or Charlo beating him and I still like him versus Jacobs, close as their encounter was.
Golovkin's title run will always be under question since most of his defenses were of a Micky mouse , second tier WBA belt. The real WBA champ was Sturm and he was defended the real title against top 10 opposition. GGG never defended his second tier belt against top 10 ranked opposition. Hopkins never defended or held a paper belt during his reign which is why his run will always be more meaningful. His record also has better names and he would have completely dominated , probably even stopped Canelo at 35.
I think so too, GGG reminded me of Hagler in the Leonard fight. Teddy Atlas said he had slipped some time ago and I wasn't on board yet. Now I think he's right.
Hagler had 66 fights by then and was coming off a savage war with Mugabi that left him hospitalized. There's very good reasons why Hagler was declined by then. What made GGG decline ? He's had a relative easy career knocking out cream puffs in one sided fights. There is very little mileage on his clock. He's never been in any wars , ever. He is well preserved like Wlad K was at 35. Its the step up in competition that made him look declined if you ask me.
He has slipped some. But he just beat fought the best two in the division who happen to be much younger durable types. I do not think Sauders is as good as Canelo who clearly lost last Saturday night, but saved some face because he was an excellent counter guy. So essentially as long as GGG doesn't face anyone as good as Canelo or Jacobs who can counter, he'll look much better in his next fight. I think GGG is at least going to tie Hopkins record. Hopkins won his first world middle weight title in 1995 for the IBF vacant title over Mercado, avenging a draw and made his first of 20 title defenses vs a 15-2-1 fighter named Steve Frank.
There were moments when he couldn't quite pull the trigger imo.I thought he won and he is still a fine fighter, but there is only one way for him to go now, and it isn't upwards!
Golovkins supposed title run started when he picked up an interim belt against 33-18-1 Milton Nunez. He didn't obtain a real world title until he beat Geale 9 fights ago. Them the facts and make of it what you will.
